Yesterday, we get a call from our landlord, and he tells dp that if a man comes to our house asking for Landlord, to tell him that he's "not home right now." He wants us to tell this guy that he lives here.
Dp asked why, and I guess LL explained it but the phone connection wasn't good. Something about driving, someone got his license, and LL's license is registered to this address. Something.

So a couple hours later the POLICE are at our house! I was in the backyard with ds. They ask dp if LL lives here, and dp answers YES!!! They ask if LL lives upstairs or downstairs, and dp doesn't answer. They leave, but say they'll be back. They haven't been back yet.
Dp is mad at LL for even asking him to lie. He regrets lying to the police (he hates lying at all). And if they come back, he said he's going to be honest, and tell them WHY he lied, and ask if there's a way they could tell LL that they found out, so he won't know that we told (so we don't get kicked out of this house- we love it!).

Grrrr....It's a good thing he didn't ask me. There's no way I would have lied. And I would have been pissed that he even asked. I can't believe dp lied.
But it's really wierd- I wanna know what's going on! We don't even have his address. He comes here every month to get his rent check.

Oh, I forgot! The police didn't use the same last name as we know LL as. Same first name (not a common one), but a much different last name.

Wierd....

He needs to call back, apologize, and set this right, NOW. If he doesn't, and your LL is engaged in criminal behavior, he could be charged with being an accessory.

Right now. No wasting time. Not tomorrow, not if they come back. He needs to fess up.

I agree with the PP. I totally get the first instinct to protect your home and help someone out. But even though he's familiar to you, you don't really know him. You don't know what happened. He may have hurt someone and there's a family out there desperately waiting for information. Anything you can tell the police could help. I'd call them back and explain.

something is not right-I'd have dp clear it up right away so he isn't viewed as harboring or being an accessory or whatever the term is.

You definitely need to call the police and let them know what happened.

Our old landlords did this to us after Hurricane Wilma flooded our house. They told us to lie to FEMA and say that they lived in the house and we were just guests there. You could only receive assistance from FEMA on the one house you resided in. They were going to say they were seperated and the husband lived in their house and the wife lived in ours. So not only would we be helping them commit fraud against the gov't, we wouldn't be able to receive any money from FEMA after losing about 95% of our possesions, including both our cars.

We told the FEMA agent about it and he said it was a good thing we didn't lie for the landlords because we would have been considered accomplices in a felony crime!

Don't wait until the police come back. Call an explain to them what happened and that you were worried about retaliation from your landlord. If he wanted you to lie to the police, he is up to no good!

He needs to explain himself, or he could be held as an accomplice or accessory to whatever criminal behavior your LL is engaged in. Do not wait for the police to return!

What everyone else said.

Your landlord has the police looking for him under a different name than you know him? And he wants you to lie? Eeek!

Tell the police and start looking for a new place to live. Not cool, but you don't want that kind of landlord. What will happen when he goes to jail?

UH OH!!! Better clear this up RIGHT AWAY. They now think this guy lives there...next they may come with a search warrant, depending on what they think he did.

Grrr....no. I told him that I thought he should, and he basically said that he didn't think it was necessary because if it was a big deal, the police would have come back looking for LL. He thinks it was something little, like a fender bender or something that LL took off from(which, isn't that also called a hit and run?).
He said he thought it was probably something really little, that the police had to investigate, and now that they "looked" for LL, they'll let it go. He saw on the news that they investigate road rage incidents now.
When I mentioned that HE should be held responsible for fixing whatever he damaged, dp brought up that if they had LL license number, then they have his insurance info (insurance in BC is linked directly to your license and renewal, I think).
I just really think that there HAS to be something really wierd going on. Why would anyone go to the trouble to make sure people can't find them? I mean, he obviously took the trouble to make sure the police (or anyone else) couldn't find him, LONG before this incident.

That is a really good point- I hadn't thought of that one...
I'm going to push dp some more to call and tell them. Could he get in trouble for lying if he calls and fesses up?

So frustrating. It is totally uncool to ask someone to lie for you.:

Frankly, I would just call on behalf of him. Straighten this whole mess up. Since YOU know what he did, if they want to get picky, they could charge you too.

I don't think they'll be happy to find out he lied but they will be WAY less unhappy than if he continues to lie and they are on a wild goose chase. You have no idea what the LL did - it could be very serious.
