Out and about in cloth - help!

Two months into cloth and we're still using sposies when we leave the house.
: Don't flame me please! The problem is that we live in the middle of nowhere. The next closest town in 30 minutes. So we only go if we have several things to do. Most of the time we skip the town and head to the city. My husband is in Phoenix with the boys today - (I was suposed to go, but that darn pregnancy insomnia kept me up until 3 last night, so here I am) - we live 100 miles from Phoenix. That's 2 hours each way in the car. (Two hours probably seems weird for 100 miles, picture twisty turny mountain roads like in The Shining.) So when we go - once a week, we go for about 12 hours. My husband is horrified by the thought of diapers in the car that long *and I kind of understand*. I mean it's almost 110 in Phoenix - imagine how hot it is inside the car.

I'd like to start at least using cloth for trips to town, but I guess I need some wet bags. What about Phoenix? Would you leave dirty dipes in the car for 12 hours in the summer?

Well, I used to live in Phoenix (Gilbert actually) and I always CDed when out and about! I never really had a smell problem except for one or two special incidents! LOL
I usually didn't leave my wetbag in the car though - I had a big enough diaper bag that I just put it in there. If you're worried about odor you could always put some TTO or Lavendar EO on a cloth wipe and put it in the wet bag. I used Fuzzi Bunz when out and about because they are so easy!
I live in Phx (well Mesa but same thing) and we use cloth out but like Mia I dont keep it in the car. Our preschool uses cloth so when I pick Maxi up I take the wet bag full of dirty dipes home with us in the car.

I think you can do it -- it will only be 6 dipes tops and if you get a good zippered wet bag and have a fairly large diaper bag you dont really need to leave them in the car.

Good luck!

You should let me know next time you are in town-- we need to have a Phx/Tucson area CDing party!!!!!
You have to discover the joys of a good wet bag. It makes all the difference - trust me. I prefer the ones at Happy Tushies but, that's just me. I've never had smell issues, but that wipe with lavender is a darn good idea!

I'm also in metro-Phoenix. Just curious where you live. I grew up in a small town in Arizona and the drive to Phoenix was the same way...twisty and curvy. I admit I've left my wet bag in the trunk of my car and then put everything in the washing machine as soon as we walk in the house. No stink in the car that way but then again, they never smell that bad. I put some TT/Lavender Oil on the little swatch inside the bag and it smells surprisingly good, even after a long day.

Where are you now?

We're in Strawberry right now. Supposed to be moving to metro-Phoenix eventually, this is just a stop over. Well, like a year long stop over.

If we lived there I imagine it wouldnt be that bad. It's just the all day thing. I like the trunk of the car idea - too bad we have a station wagon! Anyone have any other wet bags to recommend? I really need to get some, even for short trips into Payson.

How do you manage poopy dipes in public bathrooms? Change and redress the babe and then find a stall to shake the poop out? How exactly does this work?

I really need to get all of this down, in a few more months I'll be cd'ing two!

Thanks!
I haven't been to Strawberry in about a year, gorgeous up there. We went camping up at the Blue Ridge Reservoir last summer. I haven't had poo while out and about but I think that's what I'd do...get the babe all dressed and then go discard the poo.
It's not as hot where I am, but I too live in the boonies and have a 2 hour drive to the "big city" resulting in 10-12 hour days. It's been surprisingly easy to do cloth. A good wet bag is a must - Happy Tushies or mamaessentials.com are ones we like. I really haven't found the stink to be a problem, even on hot days, and I do tend to leave my diapers in the car. Now a 2-3 day trip is another matter!

As far as poops go, I'm lazy - I just roll up the diaper and stuff it in the wet bag and deal with it later. I also seem to be blessed with kiddos that save their poops for when we're at home!

You can do it - it's much easier than you'd think!

Everyone here is just so unbelievably encouraging and helpful. Without all of you I'd never be able to do this. I feel like I'm here about 3 times a week going, ummm help.

Thanks!

As for Strawberry being gorgeous MommyMellie, it is, but we're used to a little more action. That's the reason we head down to Phoenix once a week; take the kids to a little gym class, go to the zoo, etc. The kids were going stir crazy up here since we moved.

Max's Mami, I have no idea what a cd'ing party is, but count me in. I haven't seen done anything with grownup's irl pretty much since we moved here.

I'm off to look up wetbags. That's the problem with just starting - you always seem to need something!
Ok- I'm gonna try it (cloth away from home). I live in Chandler,AZ and stinky 110 deg poopy dipes in the car were keeping me from going totally cloth. I'll have to give it a try!!
Wow - I didn't realize there were so many Arizona Mamas around here! When I lived there I didn't know ANYONE else who CDed!
I love it there though - even the 110 deg heat! We're going back for a visit next week, and except for the plane ride with the kids I can't wait!
