The only one we've ever been to is the Sellwood pool, which is fast getting on my nerves. I've got the schedule for the other Portland public pools, but I have no idea what they're like. Are there any public or private outdoor pools here that are just big, straightforward pools, w/ out all the spraying things, etc. Are there any pools that aren't extremely crowded? We've been to the Clackamas Aquatic park a few times, but it's just so cold there. Even if there's a really cool pool at a hotel or motel, we're considering staying a night somewhere just so we can hang out by a pool for the day.

TIA

If you're looking in SE mostly Buckman (14th?&Stark) is almost never crowded. No frills, indoors, but it starts out pretty deep (3 feet I think). Creston (44&Powell) is outdoors and more roomy, but with a shallow side and no spraying stuff.

There's a pool in Grant Park, adjacent to Grant High school (NE 33rd & US Grant St.) I'm not really a swimmer and so have never been there, but I know it's popular with a lot of my neighbors. Pretty basic: big pool, kiddie pool, bleachers and picnic tables... etc HTH!

I haven't been to Grant Pool this summer, yet, but it is pretty basic. 2 seperate side by side pools, one shallow, one deep. They have a lot of toys to play with, but I don't remember being sprayed or anything. I think there is a diving board in the deep end. Can't remember what the water temperature is like.

Make sure to check the schedule before you go. There are a lot of swim lessons going on during the week. There is even a dive-in movie later in the summer, which I'm sure is quite the experience.

the mt. scott pool is nice, but it does have the crap that sprays. but, if you go at a preschool swim tmie, it is very mellow.

We've been going to the Creston pool, and so far it seems perfect for us. We never can seem to make pre-school times anywhere. At Creston, they have plenty of grass to lay out towels on and they have floaty mats that Logan loves. I also like that there are stairs into it instead of a "shore." Sounds like Grant pool is pretty similar.

Wanna hear something gross I heard about Sellwood pool? Those spraying fountain things - well most kids go up and sit on them, which has an enema effect, so they end up having to close the pool every now and again to clean the poop out. That's what a neighbor told me. So every time I would see a kid go sit on one, I would cringe.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions!
