Outdoor toys

So we might be moving to a new house with our very own backyard and that has me thinking about outdoor toys.I don't have a ton of money to spend but i think i'd like to get my 1.5 year old something for the backyard.I'd like it to be something she could grow into.Does anyone have anything that your kids have loved?I was thinking about a slide but I'd love to hear what's in your backyard!
Thanks!

We built a sandbox, dd loves it. We have quite a few outdoor toys, slide, picnic table, and many riding toys, I've picked them all up at the thrift store over the last couple years for next to nothing. DD played alot with the slide when we first got, but it newness wore off quickly, then she preferred the playground slides. The riding toys are another toy that dd played with at 1 and still does at 3 years.
A big dump truck, preferably large enough that she can push it in front of her without having to lean over too far. It goes well with a sandbox, and the truck bed is always handy as a doll bed if she's not into dump trucks.
I'd get plastic, since it's an outside toy and the big metal ones would be A) a pain to drag in and out and B) rust.

This is our beach-going truck (a decent size, and you can't beat four bucks) and we have a larger, older Tonka model truck at our house. I'm going to see if I can find the one we have on eBay and post a link, because it's perfect.

eta links to dump truck:
first one.
second one.

Thanks for the links.Dump trucks are good ideas.I've had my eye on a big garbage truck.Maybe sandbox is the way to go.I was wondering if the excitement of a backyard slide would ware off quickly.I guess it would depend on how close we are to a park with slides.
What about a little house?Do they get much use? They're pretty ugly most of the time but I would deal with that if it were great fun. There isn't much shade in the new back yard so maybe a little house would be nice? Please tell me if these are just a waste of money.

We have four kids ranging from 1- 9

I am guilty of collecting little tikes garage sale finds
:

we have a big pirate ship, it has a platform up top with a steering wheel, and a hideout (could be a sandbox) in the bottom of the boat. You can hook a hose up to the cannon and have a sprinkler. This is one of the most popular items in our yard. all the kids play on it climb on it. Yesterday my 9 year old and his friend were sitting up on it hiding from the little ones.

we have two plastic climbing gyms with slides the baby likes the little one with the slide because she can do it herself.

I am sure they would get more use but my two year old is terrified of spiders and saw one on the big slide once, so he won't go down

we have ride ons and rockers and those are a hit probably from about 1- 4years the cozy coup car has had ALOT of use.

if you are going to go with a sandbox (which are fun for all ages) go big! the little ones aren't deep enough to make tunnels and if you have a few friends over it gets crowded. My three older kids (2-9) play in our home made sand box which is 3 feet deep (with about 2 feet of sand) and 6x8 feet lots of room for dump trucks

have fun

oh and we have a little house, but its indoors. my boys like to climb on the roof lol but I"m sure my daughter when she's a bit older will want to have tea in it
The size of your yard ought to factor into what you get, too..you don't want your DD tripping over toys if she wants to run around in circles. We have a swingset and a sandbox, but everything else is mobile - two dump trucks, a digger, a bubble mower and a set of yard tools (wheelbarrow, rake, hoe, shovel) - stuff that I can park under the swingset when he's not using them.
We had a little house outside when I was little. It got a lot of use over the years. At one point we had little tykes kitchen stuff in it and used to bricks to make a floor out in front of it.

That's too cute! There's actually a pile of bricks in the yard that I don't think the current ownwers will be getting rid of - and i'm just the type of person who would make a patio for a play house.I'm a nut.

I'm really starting to thnk about the home made sandbox. What did you make it out of?Does it get nasty in there? What kind of maintenence is required.

I really do appreciate all the help.I've never had a yard of my own.And i don't want to waste money.

You should be able to find lots of really inexpensive stuff at garage sales.

My ds (25 mo) loves his slide and the toy lawnmower.
i vote for sandbox, house & pool (in the summer). that's pretty much all you need i think. cars & trucks are good too but it all comes down to sandbox.

DD's favorite outdoor toys are her Little People ride-on tractor and her covered sandbox with all its buckets and shovels and cups. Last summer she really enjoyed when I'd drag her baby bathtub out and let her play in it outside, so I think this summer we're going to spring for a little inflatable wading pool.

Really, though, her favorite things to play with outside are sticks and rocks. Give her a patch of dirt with some sticks and rocks, and maybe a cup to put them in, and she's set for hours.
I ordered this today...a sandbox kit with COVER!! I think the cover is really the key to having a nice sandbox
Keep any neighborhood kitties out and keep the sand fairly dry:

well our sandbox is

we dug down about 18 inches and lined the 6 by 8 foot area with pea gravel and then covered it with landscape cloth (you want the water to drain out) then build a wood frame from 2x12's built into a box shape. Then filled it with a lot of sand (there is I guess about 2 feet deep worth of sand ) until it is about 6 inches below the top of the frame. The sun sterilizes the sand. so our cover is fine plastic netting secured with upside down cuphooks under the "seat" which is a 2x 6 around the top of the sand box. The netting keeps cats and sticks out, but allows the sun to clean the sand.

My son loves to play in his playhouse . I think my mom got it at Target or Wal-Mart...

He also loves his Little Tykes basketball hoop. (Really loves this...
)

For his 2nd birthday in June, we're planning on getting him this sandbox...can't beat the price!
(In store it's cheaper...last I looked $25 I think...)

Hth!
Yay on the new house!

My dd is about the same age (she was born Nov.14, 2004) and her favorite things are the picnic table (anything she can sit on, really) and the play house. She just loves that playhouse! She peeks out the window and yells "mama!" and it's just the cutest thing ever

Congrats on moving to a new place!

I'm not a fan of the little houses - they trash the yard! But I would vote for a sandbox with a cover, and a swingset. We got a swingset/playgym for free from a neighbor who just wanted to get rid of it - we had to move it and put it back together, but it is one of those nice big wooden ones with a slide, a few swings, rope ladder, etc.

Lastly, DS's favorites are driveway toys - scooters, big dump trucks and diggers, his basketball hoop, and his Little Tykes car that I garbage picked for free :)

Oh, the swingset/playgyms are also pretty inexpensive to build - there is a brand that most lumber yards carry and it is much less than having someone build it for you.
mine really like their gardening tools. i think magic cabin has them? not sure. but there is a watering can and little shovel and stuff. they are constantly digging in the dirt, and dd (almost 5) has even grown some flowers from seed without my help.

anyways, they are basically covered in dirt every day. good times.
My kids' favorite outdoor toy is the water table. We have a few other things in the backyard, but they both flock to the water table anytime we go outside. We didn't bother with anything else, as we're lucky enough to have a fantastic park right across the road. We actually keep our "outdoor toys" (slide, climber, house) inside, so they have things to keep them active on rainy days and during the winter months.
