Hi, my 9 month old LOVES to eat and though I let her self regulate, I'm worried that she might over -eat. Is that possible? for a self regulator to overeat because they love eating so much?<br><br>
I just fed her a piece of toast and she ate it all up, I rip into into pieces and put it on the tray and she eats it all and then looks for more...<br><br>
She rarely refuses food, any time of day I can feed her and she'll take it. Usually I stop before she does.<br><br>
should I not worry about it? any advice? thanks mamas!

Are you nursing before feeding solids every time?

oh that is a good point. I do nurse sometimes, but not every time. It's not always possible to get a good nursing in though because she doesn't nurse well unless we're in our house on the bed (she's just so distractable). But I'll try that... thanks!!

If she's still nursing plenty, then no, I don't think you'll overfeed her. My DS#1 was the same way... BIG EATER. He still is! He'll eat a whole sandwich, then ask for the rest of mine (since I'm still working on it), and I sometimes will give it to him - about 1/4 of a sandwich. Then he'll eat some fruit or crackers or something besides the sandwich(es). And he's not fat at all. He's lean and muscular! I'm scared of my food budget when he's in high school. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> He eats waaaaay more than most toddlers, but it's mostly healthy stuff, so I'm not worried.<br><br>
Just try to offer healthy foods, and do try to nurse first when you can.

Also don't freak out if she goes through phases where she eats no solid food and just nurses. My daughter went from eating adult sized portions to barely a tablespoon full and back and forth. It is normal.

thanks mamas. just wanting to hear if this is "normal" and I guess it is. She just loves putting things in her mouth. Before, she used to nurse every hour so I guess now that there are solids, she's willing to eat that all the time too!

my dd was the same way. between 8-10 mos - she had a HUGE appetite - so much so that i wondered the same thing... could she overeat (self-feeding)? i think she was just growing though because at now at 1 yr. she eats way less and is still nursing.

I kept waiting for mine to slow down. I remember a lady with a toddler boy telling me that one day he'll just suddenly not eat a thing and it will scare me to death. Well, I waited and waited... never happened. But yeah, your toddler might one day decide to not eat much at all, and that is totally normal too, as long as they are still acting normal and everything. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">
