I am beginning to wonder about DS's weight. I have always heard that you don't need to worry at this age--just offer healthy choices and let them control portion size. But he seems to be getting chunky, and not growing out of it. Both DH and I struggle with weight (and overeating), so we are trying to set him on the right path at an early age.

He is a HUGE eater, and we have been very careful about what he eats. He rarely eats sweets or white flour or fatty foods--except for his love of goldfish crackers. He also doesn't eat beef, just ham, chicken and turkey. His favorite foods are black beans, red beans, whole wheat pasta, and any kind of fruit. He drinks milk with breakfast and dinner, but otherwise water or a mix of 1/4 juice and the rest water.

He is not particularly active, as toddlers go--he just isn't much into gross motor stuff. We make sure he doesn't watch much TV (an hour or so in the mornings). He goes to a daycare facility all day, and plays with the other kids. When we get home, he horses around with DH or we play outside.

So, here's the questions. How do you know if your toddler is overweight? If we do think he is overweight, how did it happen? And what should we be doing about it, given what we're already doing?

How much does he weigh, and how tall is he?

My 2 year old DD weighs 29 pounds and is considered overweight by the "charts". She is a little chunky in the belly and thigh area but looks totally average and normal.

I wouldn't worry if you are feeding him healthy choices. I have a tall skinny toddler (38 inches and 32 lbs at 28 months), but your food choices and routine sound much like ours. The only difference is that we do a lot of walking most days. We have a store that is several blocks away and he can just about walk there and back although I bring the umbrella stroller if he gets tired. We also signed him up for a pre-gymnastics class and use their indoor gym when the weather is too bad to go to a playground.
