Overwhelmed!

I know you all have seen this a thousand times, but seriously:

1. What are your favorites? I have a three month old, and am SICK of spending a dang fortune on "cheap" disposables. Not to mention to sickening amount of landfill space these things must be occupying already. The options seem ENDLESS! AAAAAACCCCCCKKKK!

2. How did you convince your partners? My MIL had to use cloth back in the 60s, and keeps telling DH she'd NEVER do it again if she had a choice. I kind of mentioned how great it must have been back in the day to have the cloth... she just shook her head and rolled her eyes. :LOL He says she knows how bad it was--why do it when we don't have to?

Any thoughts will be appreciated. I only know one lady IRL who cloth diapers, but she's kind of scarily zealous, and QUITE a bit more affluent than we are, though she doesn't seem to think so
so her "Oh, we only paid around 300 bucks" sounds obnoxious to me.

Most of my stash consists of pockets at the moment ... convenient ... trim ... easy to use and easy to care for ... www.baybee.ca, www.fuzzibunz.com, www.wonderoos.com, www.snugglebee.com

later when things calm down around here again (I'm told Skylar will grow out of having reactive airway disease 'eventually') I would like to get him into nice organic fitteds and wool pants/shorts more often than I do now as they really are my preference

Cloth diapering is WAY different now ...it's called progress LOL ... my mother thought the same as your MIL but she's kept quiet about it for the last couple of years so I think maybe she 'might' sorta get it. As far as converting DH ...around here I couldn't care less what he thinks ...he never changes diapers anyways. Back in the day when he did change a couple he needed SIMPLE and CONSISTENT ... so one style of pre-stuffed pocket was a good thing for him.

Actually $300 isn't too bad when you think about it ... just add up how much you've already spent on disposables since your baby was born and you'll see what I'm getting at.

I would buy a dozen prefolds (I prefer standard 4X6X4 ply), a couple Bummis wraps, and a wool cover or two. Don't forget to buy a snappi! I love my snappis and I am completely unable to figure out pins. Then, if you want some "easy" diapers for grandma or dh you could buy some Fuzzi Bunz (you can stuff these with infant prefolds or buy special inserts), or an AIO like www.bum-ware.com. A dozen diapers will probably only get you through one day (maybe less) but at least you can try out a couple different things before you fork over the $$. If you buy something that you really don't like you could always sell it or keep it in the car for Emergencies.

Don't forget to look for coupon codes! There are a bunch here: http://www.mothering.com/mdc/diapering_frontpage.html and you may want to browse here: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...play.php?f=224
I also highly reccomend you browse www.diaperpin.com and read reviews before placing an order.

How did I convince dh? Well, he didn't really have a choice :LOL After using them he loves cloth and would never want to use disposables again! I think most people are worried about them smelling or being a lot of work. I rationalize this by telling people that poop smells no matter what it is in, and washing an extra load every couple of days is really no big deal. I have never stuck my hands in a toilet, and I truly do *enjoy* diaper laundry.

Good Luck

1. A few good ones to start with are pocket dipes. They're easy and easy to get a hold of. I swear by Swaddlebees . They're so trim, soft and well made. I would highly recommend checking them out!!

Fuzzibunz are another good option. I personally did not like prefolds as a beginner. They're a lil hard to figure out... with needing a cover, and figuring out the best fold, etc! Pockets are easy, and with the Swaddlebees, it comes with an insert

2. Convincing DH wasn't that hard for me. I just told him I'd change her dipes, and be responsible for the laundry. I told him I at least wanted to give it a try. I agree that they have come a long way since our parents used them!! Convince him to let you try a few. He wont regret it
My DH and I both, wish we had started with our DS
We're so glad we switched, and will definitely cd any baby in the future.

My sisters still think its weird.. but hey.. they're not changing her.. or paying for any of it.. so they can think what they want :LOL My parents came around, and think it's pretty cool. They like that my DD doesn't have the rashes that my DS still continues to have (if he weren't having to be PT by late summer, I'd switch him too
). So it's been a positive switch for us all around. Best wishes

Looks like you are getting some good advice here. I'm just not down with the fuzzi bunz comments. I mean, everyone who started cding because of me went with FB's because they are so easy to use. And they are great and economical for the small and medium size. But after a year of using them I'm sick of them and ready to sell off. They held up well but got really boring and the switch from medium size to large was just bad. The larges still don't fit him! he can sit down and poop will roll out the side because they gape open at the crotch. I'd definitely go with pockets if convenience is your thing.

As for your MIL... it's been how MANY years since she used cloth??? My mom had the same opinion but I just did what I thought was best.

And about the money, ebay is great if you know what you are looking for. But working with WAHM is even better. And when baby has outgrown the diapers, you can always sell or trade.... it's like a commodity... especially if you splurge on some super cute dipes. Then buying the next size up is that much cheaper.

Good luck

Hello!

I have CDed Joe since he was 9 1/2 10 months we started with fitteds and a few PUL covers and wool and fleece to see what I liked now we have just fleece and wool (I
wool so much!!!) I also have about 3 fuzzi Bunz for night and naps I didn't know if he was a heavy wetter. My mother thought I was nuts and so did my sister until I was babysitting my nephew and she came here to get him and he had a CD on and she said "I wish I was brave enought to use them!) My mother loves that i CD him now! she always says "look at his diaper but it is so cute" Also Sposies smell NOT CDs he is only stinky in the morning and that is it! Like another Mama said I
diaper laundry :LOL but hate regular laundry I still can not figure that one out. I can not help with the DH problem sorry.

I nice, good, simple fitted to start with (that's not too, too expensive) is www.sugarplumbaby.com She makes them in regular cotton, and OC(organic cotton), OV (Organic velour), and hemp too.... I know it's hard to imagine using organic cotton velour on your babies bum at first, but you'll get the hang of it.:LOL Start simple to decide what you like.

Cool. Thanks, guys.

My dh is starting to come around-- a new package of disposible diapers e every week is starting not to look "cheap" to him.

I appreciate the advice. Off to start shopping!

1. What are your favorites? I don't know how YOU feel abotu them, but I
prefolds!!!! Love love love love them! The bulk of our stash is prefolds. Also for fitteds, my fave place is www.sugarplumbaby.com. She has quick-dry cotton, hemp, organic cotton velour, etc. And at $7-15 each, that's pretty good! I tend to get the $7-9 fitteds because we can't afford much more. Try the Trading Post here on MDC if you have enough posts to see it. It has truly revolutionized my diaper stash. We wouldn't be able to afford half of what we have if not for the TP.
2. How did you convince your partners?[ My dh is the same kind of thinker as yours. But most people(dh's and MIL's included) all think that cloth is flats, pins, and plastic pants.. It's come so far from there! My selling point to my dh was, "let's try it. I do all the washing anyway. I'll let you choose your style and colors and patterns. If you hate it after 2 weeks, we'll talk then." And to this day he uses mostly fuzzi bunz but he will do a fitted and wool soaker if that's all that is around. He refuses to do prefolds though. If it doesn't go on and off like a disposable, he won't do it. And he doesn't see the cuteness factor and rolls his eyes when I tell him how happy cloth makes me, but he DOES change diapers! With no comments and no fussing. I wouldn't tell dh that he shoud try cloth and then use sposies if he doesn't like cloth because he WILL go to sposies without giving cloth a chance most likely.

And honestly I just want to tell you that some of the dh's on this board still use sposies whe the mama's use cloth. It isn't always 100%cloth all the time because sometimes they completely refuse. All you can do is tell him how much money you will save in the long run and hope he sticks with it after the tria period. I'd get soem aio's or pockets so he sees how easy it can be and hep it works wel

Something else that helped convince my DH was that I no longer need to constantly ask him to take out stinky bags of trash. He soon noticed how much nicer the house smelled without dirty disposables laying around.
I would say to experiment. I started by using Kushies AIOs, but since have found that pockets last longer and are better as far as adjusting the absorbancy. I really like fitteds and wool too. My DH rarely changes the babe, but mainly because I am around all the time. I am always showing him the web site about the chemicals in disposables and the number being thrown away. He tends to humor me, but understands why I do it. We have saved money using cloth mainly because it has a longer life. Good luck to you!
you've gotten lots of great suggestions for diapers. I had the exact same conversation with my MIL - maybe they are the same person :LOL I got some Happy Heiny's - they are a velcro closing pocket diaper - those were specifically for MIL to use on the very rare occasion that she watched the baby. She still isn't on board with cloth but does admit that it is much different than when her kids were little, and much better for the baby.

As for dh - he wasn't on board with it at all when I started cding my older dd, but once the baby arrived and we started cding her and he started to see how much better it was for her and that she had no rashes where her big sisters always had them, he started to realize that maybe I was right afterall. He is a great cd advocate now and tells people all the time how great cloth is
I just love that man of mine!

My DH was skeptical at first, but now he is completely on board and even agrees with bringing cloth (and some unbleached, unscented sposies) on our upcoming vacation.

We started with prefolds but I found and still find that they are hard to get a good fit on my small boy - the 8 ply is just too thick (haven't tried the thinner ones). Lots of people love them though. I like flat diapers because they're less bulky and dry in a flash. They're really not hard to fold (good instructions at diaperware.com/picturepages/flatfolding.htm) - I personally love taking a square piece of cotton, fold fold fold and presto! It's a diaper! You can try it with an old receiving blanket. We have some Wonderoos that DH finds easy to use and we use them for DS's part-time am daycare. They have held up really well, don't leak, wash and dry easily and are size-adjustable. Plus, the resale value is good, so if you don't like them you can sell them. I've slowly bought fitted dipes and prefer wool covers. You don't need very many, and if you sew or knit it's easy to make wool shorts or soakers. You can also buy everything off the TP - don't be intimidated by the "hyena" stuff, there's plenty of regular dipes out there too!

When I've shown off DS's dipes at baby showers, etc, people are amazed at how cute and ingenious they are (especially the pocket dipes and the size adjustability of Wonderoos). My MIL is aghast, but I don't care - she would never change his diaper anyway

Yeah, $300 isn't bad for a whole complete stash of diapers.

Just think a whole stash of Fancy snap diapers in cute colors that are trim, easy for DH as disposies are, and will last your baby all the way thru Potty training which is about 2-3 YEARS!!!!!!!!

That's quite a deal!!!

If you get a One-size fits all diaper, you can get away with that price. Otherwise Prefolds and covers will cost a bit more, and any sized diapers like Swaddlebees or other diapers that have multiple sizes will cost Waaay more.

Still of course MUCH LESS than ANY DISPOSABLE DIAPER!!!!!

Your first 3 months alone cost between $200-$400 for disposables depending on the kinds that you buy, and how often you change your precious newborn.

Some mommies are only able to change their newborn 10 times a day because they are so broke and can't afford diapers!!!!

I, and many other mommies I know changed more like 20 times a day for those first few months.

If you think that's a really ludicrous number, try adding up how many diapers in just one day. You'll really be surprised.

It's hard to add up how much you spend on disposies because every time you run out to Target, or the Grocery store to get diapers, you always end up spending more like $50 per trip, for this or that.

Now you have to also include sales tax on every pack of dipes. Gas to the dumb store. Wasting your time and your life at the store to pick up diapers. Disposable Wipes(washable wipes are soooo much better for baby's skin!). And how do you tack on any future health problems for baby as he/she grows into an adult and wants to have a long life with children of their own???
What about the extra costs of Trash Disposal. I knew a lady of 3 in diapers(twins and a 2 yr old) that had to have 3 TRASH CANS every week!!!! Costs to the Environment????? Our concience????

Get some Cloth diapers quick!!! Don't worry about the cost. Whatever fancy diapers you get you'll be so happy with, you'll never even think back to how much you spent. Plus DH will be so happy to help change baby if you get some aio's or pockets just for him!!!

I could never even buy a pack of disposies for outings because I'd think, "Geez $15 for a pack of diapers, I could get a whole All-in-one for that!"

Every time you change a disposie it's costing you lots of $$$$$$$$.

Every time you change a cloth dipe you're putting $$$$ back into your family's pocket!!!!!

Plus getting a full package of nice OS dipes is not like wasting $$ on something that is fancy but useless, like an heirloom blanket that is pretty, but will sit in the closet for years. Fancy Diapers will get USED! Just like your Heat or Electricity, this is something you'll use many, many times a day, for years and years, and may be able to be passed down to another child.

Most moms start with 12 prefolds and a few velcro covers and go from there. That's what we started with years ago. If you have the cash though, you can just start with the nice snap diapers and go from there.

You'll obviously need to add to your stash. 36 is a minimum, but 12 may last you almost a day. Any one-size diaper may seem a little bulky at first, but babies grow soooo quickly, that they will soon fill it up in no time at all. Trust me, my ds #3 was 21 lbs at 5 mo! He was in a Large at that time, and he grew out of sm at about 6 weeks, went thru Med in a few months, and was able to wear a Lg at 5 mo and stayed in that size until potty training(we're working on it now and he's 2, although we still have a ways to go!)

You can get a OS fitted for between $8-$12 ea, maybe even Hemp or Organic cotton!

Fitteds are a good choice for heavy wetters, babys in all sizes, skinny or really chubby babies, breathability, able to work with wool soakers, or covers really well. Can be used with any kind of detergent without messing them up, are super easy to wash, and can't be screwed up in any way(Bleach is a no-no for any diapers though)
Fitteds are pretty much a Cadillac of Prefolds. Like a soft comfy prefold, without the bulk, folding, expensive covers, pins, blah boring white color, and hassle.

With Fitteds you only need a simple pull-on cover for outings or night time, during the day I go coverless. It's more breathable, and cute that way, and soooo comfy for baby! One-size fitteds are actually LESS than prefolds and velcro covers, and much Easier to use!!!!!!!!!!

All pockets and all-in-ones can be made as a one-size too, all have positive and neg points, but no matter what you decide on, it will allllllll work fine, be cheaper and better for your baby and family in the long run.

If you have any ques on how to start a stash for $35, and get a nice Complete stash for $200 just Private message or email me

My 19mo DS has worn size large FB since he was 8 1/2 months old. He was a chubby baby though. Leg gaping hasn't been an issue for us. If a FB isn't fitting right, I would say experiment with bulkier/less bulky stuffing. Since all babies are built a little differently, I am sure there are are some they don't fit, but unfortunately I think this is probably true of any diaper/cover other than a prefold or flat.

We started with 12 FB and washed every day while DS was sleeping for several months (FB are more expensive than flats or prefolds, but they are very user-friendly and you can sell them on ebay for a good amount when you need to get the next size). I still
the FB, and these are always the diapers I grab out of my diaper bag to show people who show interest in cloth.

We branched out into other kinds of diapers because 1) I wanted to have some more breathable diapering options for at least part of the time, and 2) I wanted more diapers so we could wash less frequently, 3) I didn't want to shell out the $$$ for a large stash of FB. So now we also use fitteds and prefolds with pul (BSWW) and wool covers (aristocrat, bj marketplace, and ones I have made).

Some of my favorites besides FB are:

unbleached chinese prefolds (ubcpf)
tip: snappi (what I do) or pin your prefolds so fewer covers get soiled
http://www.nickisdiapers.com/Prefold...-%20Unbleached

ecobaby grow-with-me one-size fitteds
http://www.mtdiaperstore.com/product...roducts_id=105

A good workhorse one-size fitted is the Mother-ease Onesize diaper (MEOS). I don't use them but I have friends who do. As your baby gets older you need to use doublers with these. One friend prefers prefolds rather than the ME doublers. Mother-ease diapers also resell well on ebay:
www.motherease.com

Here are my 2 favorite diapering links for folks just starting out:

P.S. I have some of sarahbay's pollywog diapers fitteds and have been very pleased! WHen I have DS running around the house in just a diaper with no cover people always think they are cute!

This attitude baffles me. It's like saying "Oh, I would NEVER use a computer, I used one back in the 1960's and it took up the WHOLE ROOM and you had to feed PUNCH CARDS into it!"

This is the twenty-first century, folks. Go with it.
It can definitely be overwhelming. I've tried to boil it all down into the simplest possible routine: http://diaperpages.com

I think either prefold and wraps or prefolds and pocket dipes are the easiest way to cloth diaper.

Oh, that's killing me!

Well, MIL IS the sort of woman who feels that way about computers. At least she's consistent.

Gosh, I'll be spending all day sorting through all this experienced advice. I'm REALLY excited about cloth now... the cuteness factor alone is about to do me in.
