Just got back from the hospital. I woke up this morning with a hot, rock hard lump in my calf that was red and itchy and a red itchy line spreading from it all the way up my calf behind my knee and inside my thigh. It started out a couple of days ago with a red itchy spot on my calf, like a mosquito bite and just got worse until this morning when it hurt to walk.

Turns out it's phlebitis (vein inflammation) and it's infected. Apparently it's kind of common in pregnant women but can be dangerous for baby when infected- infection can spread to the blood etc. So now I started on antiobiotics this morning, but they don't seem to be helping yet and it's gotten noticeably worse in the last few hours. I have a slight fever and the shivers and the red area that follows the vein up my leg is redder and itchier and very painful. Sucks.

If it gets worse instead of better I might have to go in for IV antibiotics. Boo.

I wonder how all these antibiotics will affect my GBS test week after next?

I thought I was uncomfortable before- now I'm in real pain. I have to keep it elevated with hot compresses and no more exercise. Now I can really bitch and moan- from the couch with my leg up in the air and everything! DH is a lucky man!

Crashing here because I had bilateral phlebitis with my dd over 16 years ago. It was the most painful thing I have experienced (worse than labor). You have my sympathy.

I'm glad they caught it before it got to the "can harm baby" level, but it still sounds really horrible. Take care of yourself and don't hesitate to go in for an IV if you need it.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH thanks so much for this tip!!! I had a bath with epsom salts a little while ago and my leg feels soo much better. I think I'm going to have to soak in the bath twice a day until this thing heals up. I thought the pain couldn't possibly get better- but it worked!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I was wondering how you were feeling. I am so glad that worked for you! When I had phlebitis it felt like someone stabbing a knife in my leg or a charlie horse whenever I got up to walk. No fun. Anyway, I hope you are feeling all better very soon!

How on earth did I miss this thread??? I'm really sorry you had to deal with this, but happy to hear that the epsom salts helped with the pain. How does that thingy look now? Is it getting better with the antibiotics and epsom salt soaks?

Thanks for the concern everyone!
I'm doing a little better. The swelling has gone down a lot, my leg doesn't look so much like a botched science experiment anymore and the pain is definitely more manageable. I have been going a bit crazy staying off my feet for the past week. I feel like I have so much to do and it's crazy frustrating not being able to stand or hobble around for more than a few minutes before I have to lay down again. I'm hoping to be back up to 75% functioning by mid next week. But in the meantime everything around here is falling apart and instead of getting more prepared for this baby to get here, now there is mountain of catch up to do. And I haven't exercised in over week, haven't been doing much birth/relaxation practice (unless trying to relax and breathing through my current pain counts!), haven't been making my RRL concoctions or any of that stuff that I was on top of. I hope it's all recoverable by the time this blows over.
Ah well. DH has been doing his best but is pretty swamped lately.

Anyway still alive, but not kicking much yet!
