How cool is that, after all we've been through trying to get him to talk! Here's the list of words he can read....

Owen
Mom
Jason
Thomas
Percy
Ned
Edward
Gordon
Peter Sam
James
Donald
Duck
Sir Topham Hatt
Skarloey
Dog

Notice a trend? LOL! If I write any of those down he knows what they are and will tell me. How cool is that?!? We noticed this first a couple weeks ago when Owen, Jason and I were out at breakfast. To pass the time while we waited for our food Jason started writing Owen's name. As he wrote the letters Owen said what they were then said the word afterwards. We found he can read all of these, and has on more than one occaision
Now how do I expand this newfound skill past train names....

Actually, what Angela said is the exact advice our OT and TEACCH gave us, Steph. I suppose I should get on that.

The key is to make sure you vary the font, though, because they have had cases of kiddos who learn to read in only one typefont, and can't read in any other font, if you can believe that.
: So like, type out different words like "window," "door," etc....you know, like in "The Color Purple," and tape them on said objects.

So that's awesome!! WTG, Owen!!!
: I'm very impressed and a little jealous.

Just choose easy to read fonts to start out- then if you're ambitious, after he knows a word, change the tag on it to a very different font- even cursive.

Can he find the letters on the keyboard and type out the words?

Maybe he would enjoy something like that. Sometimes its a lot easier to recognize the letters on a keyboard rather than recall the letter for hand printing or developing the needed fine motor skill is too intimidating. Anyways, I wonder if he knows more words than you are able to present to him and maybe if he could pick out the letters himself he might spell even more words?

That is so cool to discover he can read!

We used to play Google Images. Bede sat in my lap and I typed a word into a Google Image Search (make sure Safe Search is on, is all I'm sayin') and he would read the word before I hit enter. That's how we learned he could read.

It's great because you get many different pictorial representations of one word, which I know really helps kids on the spectrum build their libraries of specific-to-general concepts.

Owen is awesome! You might also try always having the captions or subtitles on when Thomas is playing as well, to get more words, like you know, "Bother!" and "Cinders and ashes!"

Ezra started doing the same around the same age. He has a good 15 or so words he can read and spell. A lot of them came from bumblebee videos where they say the word, show the thing, and also show the word. Yay, Owen! Isn't it so great after all the things he's behind other kids with to have something he's advanced at? I know that sounds so awful and wrong, but it's something I can't help but get from Ezra's academic gifts.
