My intact, nearly three-year-old son just called me over, saying he had owies. He showed me his penis--he'd retracted his foreskin, and it was reddened, and even might have been a little bloody--it was hard to see. By the time I got him into the light, his erection was gone, and I couldn't see anything. He didn't really want me to look at it closely, in any case.

He doesn't seem bothered now. I don't need to worry, do I? Is there anything I should do, or anything I should look for?

That all sounds normal. Little boys and little girls get "owies" of varying types on their intact genitals. One of my favourite remedies when my kids were young was Penaten, a zinc diaper cream that comes in a little tin. Anytime anyone complained of being chafed, red, sore, etc, I would glob that on. Within hours, all was well. Good for you for keeping your son intact and for letting him be in charge of retracting.

From you description I would say that he has started to seperate this can cause a bit of redness and ouchie for a bit till it heals over it is all part of the normal development. The only caution is to keep watch for infection, redness, swelling with discharge.
