I'm reading a book and the author talks about how she was raised to never thank dieties and elementals, b/c it's disrespectful. She says it's disrespectful to them b/c it shows that we see ourselves as separate. She says that our true feelings of gratitude are enough and they can feel it w/o the words.

I'd never thought about it that way. I say "thanks" due to manners, but I can see her point. Any thoughts?

Well my answer may not be totally relevant because I don't really relate to the Divine in the form of individual dieties. Monotheistic Pagan. I believe that I can see and experience the Sacred in a variety of ways and forms, but that the Sacred is whole. I like the "ground of all being", immanent and transcendant approach.

Anyway, I do say thank you although I don't always do so with spoken words. Gratitude in my heart is still a thankful gesture. I feel blessed and grateful for the presence of the Divine in my life. To me, not feeling or expressing gratitude would seem disrespectful.

I thank the gods all the time. To me it seems silly to think that such beings would bother being easily offended. I love and appreciate them and all that they provide for us, naturally I am going to thank them.

Well, since I say Thank You to myself, I see no reason not to say Thank You to the rest of my Self.

And if you've never said Thank You to yourself when you do things right or say nice things... you should try it. It's a real rush.
