This morning before I left for work, my 18 month old grandson woke up we spent about 10 minutes together. He made an "owie" face and held his diaper area. I took his diaper off and he kept making the face and grabbing himself (there) I inspected a little but didn't really see anything. It seemed like maybe it was a little "puffy" .. but I don't know. I put a new diaper on him and gave him to grandpa and left for work. But it does have me a little concerned. Anybody have experience with toddlers complaining of pain down there?

Could be just that his foreskin is starting to become retractable. Sometimes when the natural adhesions that hold the foreskin to the glans in infancy start breaking down, kiddos can experience a bit of stinging when they urinate.

Do you know if anyone has forcibly retracted him? Another caregiver, doctor, nurse? If he has had trauma like that there, he could also be having some pain while it is healing.

Signs of infection that you should watch for are swelling, redness, discharge and being hot to the touch. Unless he is experiencing any of these, there probably isn't anything to be too concerned with(unless of course he was forcibly retracted, in which case, that individual needs to be spoken to).

Good luck to you guys!
All kids get that from time to time. Could be the urine is too concentrated or diaper rubbing or foreskin separating (although he is a bit young for that).

I use some sort of natural oil on the area whenever one of my grand kids complain of pain down there. If I have nothing else I'll use olive oil or just some good hand cream. It generally solves the problem.

He may have a little infection though. Have him drink a lot and don't feed him too much for a day, just mostly push fluids... so in case there is something in there, he'll flush it out.

That happened to my grandson right after he was weaned. He said he peepee hurt and we took off his diaper to see. Suddenly he screamed like mad and urinated all over the place. He even got very sweaty and pale. I was so worried. But after that it was over with. Never had it again. That was 8 yrs. ago. Must have been something was in the urinary tract.

interesting .. yea my dd said she has noticed he is fine after he pee's, she said it has been sort of puffy for a few days, but he only complains in the morning when he has a wet diaper. He does have a cold right now so maybe that has something to do with it.
