Painful tailbone

981 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  ebethmom
On Saturday, we were out for a walk, when I sneezed and did something to my tailbone. (pulled a muscle? dislocated?)
It is very painful, especially when getting up from sitting.
Comfort measures? Anyone else have this happen?

My tailbone hurts sometimes. I couldn't tell you what triggered it at first, but it's really painful when I move from sitting to standing. My midwife says that I broke it sometime in the past and that it hurts now because when I sit I put pressure on it. I find that moving around during the day helps a lot, I take walks at lunch, and on the days I don't, I'm in a lot more pain.
Well, I know it hurt severely after my first was born, for a few weeks. But to just have it happen because I sneezed wrong? I just laughed at the wierdness of hurting myself sneezing, while hobbling back to the van. It's not so funny now, 3 days later when it still hurts pretty badly.
I dislocated mine with my first birth. With the second and third (current) pregnancies it has really bothered me. The explanation I've had from midwives, chiropractors and massage therapists is that the hormones of pregnancy let everything loosen enough so that it can either slip out of place again or just put a lot of pressure on muscles and ligaments to hold everything together. Not that you necessarily dislocated it, but you probably injured it in the past. As for the sneezing, it does sound funny, but sneezing actually generates a whole lot of pressure. Unlike hilary122, I do much better if I don't walk much, that really aggrivates it. Try to see which works for you - walking or staying off your feet.
NO! I didn't know that tailbone pain comes back! I did something to my tailbone (or, rather, my ds's head did something to my tailbone) during labor, and the pain was far worse than the contractions. My midwife suspected I broke it. I couldn't sit up for WEEKS.

Now I'm pregnant again. And, after seeing your posts, really freaked out about this. For those of you with tailbone pain, what were subsequent labors like?

Truvie, I could have written that myself. A lot of people - including midwives - tell you that once it's been broken it will break during subsequent labors. Mine didn't. It actually bothered me far more during my pregnancy that the actual labor. Don't know if it makes you feel any better or not, but it doesn't have to hurt again during labor.
Hi, I had the awful tailbone pain in this pregnancy, and conquered it!!! Yay! It was excruciating for weeks. I finally went to a chiropractor who was able to adjust it after just one or two visits and I haven't felt the pain since. Aaaaahhhh. I have scoliosis, and apparently the loosening ligaments had allowed my pelvis to shift forward on one side and pull the tailbone with it. The first chiropractor I saw specifically asking about helping with this pain was completely clueless and just did a regular adjustment. The second guy nailed it on his first try. He even showed me what he did on a skeletal model.

Best of luck!

P.S. I intend to use my tailbone incident as a "medical" reason to stay upright in labor off my butt if they give me a hard time about it...

this happened to me last pregnancy!!!!! everybody i talked to thought i was such a freak
: it was really painful for several weeks (sorry i know that's not what you wanted to hear) i felt better when i laid down in bed and didn't move. even rolling over was excruciating and walking made it worse. i was terrified to sneeze the rest of the pregnancy, and still get nervous this time around!

i went to my ob at the time and she said that she couldn't tell for sure if it was pulled or a fracture without x-rays, but even if they knew for sure, there wasn't any difference in treatment, so she gave me a script for tylenol #3 (which of course i didn't take, despite the nurse's reassurance that "they give narcotics to pregnant women all the time"
:
sure, that made it sound like a good idea.....
) i'm guessing someone less medically minded would be more helpful to you.

it felt somewhat better (or maybe i just got good at finding comfy positions) by the end of the first week though. i hope you find some relief from the pain soon!

my tailbone was dislocated at the moment of my first's birth when my overzealous mw pulled ds out by his neck.

the pain in the weeks after his birth was terrible. and i never got help, i should have. i thought it was normal and it wasnt. it did eventually fade, as my hormones returned to normal.

this pg the pain returned at around 28 weeks. the relaxin allowed the bones to shift, and usually previously dislocated and injured joints will have a tendency to react. (not always)

this time i got help. i went to a chiro who specializes in pg and postpartum care. it helped tremendously, and is worth it. if you are suffering dont wait! we couldnt really afford the chiro but i just had to, and i am so glad i did. (he also helped me turn my footling brech baby this time) i plan to see him one more time after the birth.

he said it isnt curable, but adjustments can help ease the pain, and a pp adjustment can help it heal faster in the right position. i have also enjoyed the pelvic adjustments, as this babe is riding low and my pelvis feels like it is going to break apart.

no pulling on this babe as she is born. goodness.

I highly recommend chiropractic treatment!! One adjustment totally alleviated my tailbone pain. My chiropractor did a very gentle treatment, but it really worked.

I didn't have that kind of tailbone pain with my first pregnancy. Every time I stood up, it felt like I had a giant bruise on my tailbone. OUCH!!! But now it's gone, thank goodness!
