When I received the initial emails I was totally overwhelmed! Today our breastfeeding coalition decided to do this: We are giving postcards to various members who facilitate support meetings (WIC IBCLC, WIC RD, Hospital IBCLC, LLL Leaders, Public Health Nurses). They are passing around a clipboard with the following information sheet attached. The moms can then write a couple of sentences about how they feel regarding this Ad Council situation. Our facilitators bring them back to a designated person, person then sticks address labels and stamps on them. We wanted a way moms' voices could be heard, but moms could still be nursing their babies or chasing their toddlers, too. Feel free to use this letter, tweak it, or send to it someone who might be able to use it.

Attention Breastfeeding Supporters –
Your Help is Urgently Needed!

The National Ad Council set up a breastfeeding promotion series of TV advertisements. The Ad Council is responsible for raising awareness for many different things including the promotion of seatbelt use and exposing the dangers of cigarette smoking. The Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign focuses not on the benefits of breastfeeding, but the hazards of not breastfeeding. It has been tested in over 30 focus groups in four regions of the US and has been proven a success.

The infant formula industry has taken recent action to delay and/or change the content of these ads.

Moms, Dads, concerned citizens – this is America, and our voices need to be heard. Please take the time to share your comments so we can let the Honorable Tommy G. Thompson know we URGE him to support the scheduled launch of this campaign and to leave the content just as the Ad Council’s research proved would be most effective.

Sample statements:

*I am a breastfeeding mother and I urge you to support the planned launch of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign.

*Please support the Ad Council’s Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign and help ensure its contents are left intact and it follows its scheduled release date.

*Breastfeeding is best for babies – even the formula companies admit that. Please support the Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign so it can go forth to raise awareness and help babies be healthier.

*Breastfeeding is too important not to do – please support the Ad Council’s Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign. Please hear our voices and speak for our babies.

*I am a breastfeeding supporter. By promoting the Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign you are promoting better health for babies.

A short, focused note sent by many people will have a greater impact than long letters written by a few. We are tax payers and we do have a voice! Keep your notes short and to the point. Sign your name. We will take care of the postage, and you will officially earn the title of lactivist! Do it for your baby!
