I've been meaning to do this for a long time and finally found a free minute.
Here is what I did
cut the sides of the panties (you don't HAVE to, but they are much easier to work with flat) carefully where the serging is. I'll re-serge this later
I traced the panty onto paper and then trimmed that down to come up with my soaker shape. The most important part being that the soaker is the same width or narrower than the crotch of the panties... then make the contour as wide as you like after that. I think wider is better.. more fabric.. more absorbency.. less bulk. I used three layers of hemp french terry. They are nap trainers. For day trainers to keep puddles off the floor, two layers work for us belive it or not. Three layers for naps, and four layers for nighttime.
Then, I serged my soaker.
Pinned it onto the panties and I sewed two lines of stitches (I think one line would create too much stress on the delicate knit fabric of the panties and cause holes) lining up with about the narrowest parts of the crotch area.
Then, I serged the sides of the panties back up.
These aren't waterproof, but they are MUCH more absorbent than the gerber trainers(fit better too) and way cheaper than any cotton/hemp wahm trainers, and pretty fast to make once you get the first one done so you have your contour pattern.
I like hanes her way panties in the high rise.. they ahve a bikini cut too, but they sit low on the hips and don't give much room to add a soaker in there. Boy underpants work well for this too and have a wider crotch usually.
Also, be sure and size up on the panties. My daughter is in between a 3 and a 4T in panties so I'm using a 4T for the trainers. And actually, we could go up to a 6 since panties tend to run small.
I hope this helps someone! I think I'm going to do a big batch of these to trade for the rest of the newborn items I need. I wonder if there will be enough interest.

Anyway
I'd love to see it if someone else gives this a try.
