My DD has been chewing paper for years. She's 11. I hate that she does it and whenever I catch her I say, "If it's not food...." and she either finishes the sentance or groans. I don't recommend it. You could be starting a life long habit.

My mom kept a lot of my first books, and a number of them were chewed. I did not develop a lifelong habit...ok, so I am a closet paper eater. lol Seriously, I would expect that for most kids, this would not be a long-term habit, but I do discourage it in my DS (almost one year old).

DD chews on everything too, esp books & paper.<br><br>
BUT they can choke on paper, as we have had to pull the torn paper out of DD's mouth! Really there are plenty of safer things we've found for her to gum up! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

I can tell you from personal experience that comes out much the same as it went in <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

someone recently mentioned that they give baby nori to tear apart instead of paper.<br><br>
Our daughter doesn't really chew (gum) the nori but she does like to rip it apart and scatter it around and crinkle it up in her hands much the same way as she does paper.<br><br>
Our DD cries if we take the paper away from her so we try to keep her away from it to start with. If she gets it, she gets to gum it for awhile and then we make her give it up. She's fast though. It really is appealing to her.

I started a thread here recently about DS eating paper. Like Shannon said, it comes out like it goes in <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
We just try to keep it out of his reach. If he finds some, we take it away immediately to be replaced with something else. I keep meaning to get Nori for him but haven't remembered yet. Shannon - Nori is the seaweed wrapping for sushi, I believe.

yep... the seaweed that's pressed into sheets for sushi. It tastes a bit salty and very green <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"> I actually quite like it but I LOVE sushi too. When it gets wet it's pretty tough and a bit rubbery. When it's dry it is a lot like paper. You can find it with the sushi rice usually in a supermarket.

Awww, that would explain why I didn't know what it was <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br>
I'll have to try that--nothing in it is bad for her??

The way I look at it is - if that's the worst thing that goes in his mouth that day then it's not all that bad. Like some PPs have said, it's <a href="http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/srbug/tp.jpg" target="_blank">just fiber!</a> <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"> (DS had already eaten some when I snapped this picture.)

Yeah, if my DS would just play with it, rip it up, whatever, I wouldn't care. But it inevitably goes down the hatch.<br><br>
The other day I could actually read words on the piece that came out in his diaper. THAT was freaky <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">
