Over the past 18 months, at least 129 ambulance attendants across the U.S. have been accused of sex-related crimes on duty or off, an investigation by The Associated Press found. Some of them molested patients in the back of an ambulance.

Yuck yuck yuck...

I have always wondered if spouse or parent or someone is allowed in the back of the ambulance, or if they are not "permitted."

I know I for one would prefer my spouse or my mom were with me back there..

I'm a paramedic in Canada ... not sure what policy and procedure is across the states, but here, having an escort in the back with the patient is up to our discretion.

If the patient is critical and we will be working hard and performing potentially upsetting procedures in a very small space, we ask that the loved one ride up front with the driver, although they can look back through the pass-through at any time.

If it is a routine call, one escort is welcome in the back, so long as they are not drunk or belligerent or pose any threat to patient care.

When my partner is a male, and the patient an under-age female, I request that I attend. If it is his attending day, then I discreetly and strongly suggest that an escort go in the back ... CYA as much as anything else. Most guys are okay with that, to avoid misunderstandings and false accusations.

Are there creeps who take advantage of a compromised patient?
Absolutely. Just as in any profession where trust is a major player.
Preschools, churches, schools, music lessons, sports teams ... unfortunately, the medical profession is not immune to our share of perverts.
