I just had to share this. I went to the OB/GYN yesterday, and while flipping through some pamphlets in the exam room, I found a memo for expectant parents telling them that if they wanted their baby circ.'d they would have to pay cash in advance-$298. It said if the insurance then paid for it afterword, the parents would be reimbursed.
I guess insurance companies have deemed circ unnecessary and won't pay for it? This is the primary OB office for my area, so I bet the circ rate around here just dropped through the floor.

There are many that won't pay for it and my guess is that they either didn't want to deal with the insurance company and trying to keep yup with the ones that do and the ones that do not or they are trying to discourage circumcision. 300 bucks is a deterrent for many.

Good for them. Even if they are only doing it to make sure they get paid, it's going to be little things like this that add up. So many people stll think it's "normal". The AMA may say it isn't medically necessary but the medical community sure doesn't act like that's true. Maybe having to pay for it will make people finally realize it's an unnecessary surgery - every additional intact boy makes a difference.

I have two aquaintances on Medicaid who had boys recently. One came up with the $300, and the other one decided it wasn't worth it. However, had Medicaid covered it, it would have never made her think to research if it was really something worth doing.

I'm sorry to say, but I know *way* too many people who would think 300$ is a drop in the bucket, and would gladly pay more than that for a circ. Now, were *I* inclined to circ (oh geez, even that bit made me :LOL) 300$ would deter me.

Despite that this is probably just doctor greed (making sure to get the whole 300) it's a start. Good for them. I hope it deters more and more people.
