PDX Book Club!

I want to start a mothering-issue centered book club. The first book we would read (which I haven't read yet) will be The Motherhood Manifesto. The Multnomah County Libraries have 7 copies of which a few are available. Also I believe a few people own it and may be willing to share. We should meet at the end of July, just to give everyone time to read at least some of it before the meeting.

To encourage the spirit of mothering, it will be held in a kid-friendly environment, and bringing the kid(s) is encouraged.

I encourage even people who have only skimmed the book, or even would like to skim the book at the meeting, to come. Though of course it's preferred everyone has read it... so make your best effort. I'm going to look into getting a spot in the People's Food Coop community room (near SE 21st and Powell) if the interest is high enough. Please mention any other good spaces you know of. If only a few (4 or less) are interested, than maybe a kid-friendly coffee shop (or *gasp!* my house) would work better.

Anyone interested, get to postin'! Feel free to contribute ideas as well.

I'll give it a shot. I don't know if I'm going to be able to read all of the books, but I'll at least give the first one a go. One book at a time, that's my motto.

People's would be perfect!

Arrgh! I am interested! The copy I'd held through the library went back YESTERDAY b/c I didn't pick it up on time!!!
: Sooo, I can order it again!!! When will we meet? I'd love to come... (Are the kiddos invited to come, too?)

I'm interested, but I work weekdays. Also it's kind of impossible for me to go anywhere sans Sprogly, and he's very....very three.

I'd be interested but the locations kind of far for me. Maybe if it rotated NE/SE or something. Or Laura could give me easy and fun bus directions since she is the bus queen...

I can give you a ride if you have a car seat. You're not suuuuuuuuuuuuper far away, are you?

As I said in the original post
, kids are encouraged! I really don't expect moms to have to arrange childcare for a book club focused on mothers. Mostly because I will surely have my little terror on two legs with me.

zeldabee, your presence is very much needed in the book club for your perspective on single-working-motherhood. Pauline, I'd also love to see you there, so hopefully you can arrange a ride with Sara! #9 goes all the way from NE to two blocks from the coop.

I have to check with the community space as to when we can get it, but I'm shooting for July 29th or August 5th. If saturdays are better than sundays, I'll try for those.

Me too! Me too! Sat or Sun works great. I'd be willing to host in my big living room, but my house is hazmat worthy.

Also, Mult. Co. Lib. had several copies available.
What a great idea! Count me in too. I have an almost two-year-old who would likely be coming with me, depending on time. : )
This sounds great. The only thing for me is that ds naps in the afternoon. What time were you thinking of getting together?

Can we bring outside snacks and drinks in the community room?

Thanks for organizing! I'd better get reading...
Ok, well I'm having the book held for me. Washington Co. library only has two copies. I have a Multnomah library card as well, but hopefully I'll get my copy by the weekend. Maybe I should just buy it...
I'm interested but need to know a date/time before I can commit. And if it works out I can pick Pauline up on my way because I have to pass her house to get to almost anything since I live in Vancouver.

ETA: Vancouver library does not have this book and I can't buy one right now anyone have a copy to borrow?

Just picked up my copy today at the Beaverton Library. Now, please let Sprogly pass out for a nap so I can start it.
I'm applying for the community space either August 4th (saturday), 12PM or later, or August 5th, 3PM or later. Please reply with what works best for you within this time frame. I'm sure outside snacks would be welcome in the community room... I'll get confirmation of that though.

Just got my copy today, I'm 20 pages in and already steaming! I can't wait to discuss it.
Outside snacks are totally welcome. We had Nico's first birthday there and we brought all kinds of things.

Either day works fine for me, but Sunday is preferable because of the time.

Thanks!

Maybe the Saturday only because I've got vacation days August 6-8 and I may want to go out of town. If I can afford it. Hah.

I really want to be part of the book club, and come to this meeting, but PLEASE don't have it on Sunday August 5th, because that's the afternoon of the big LLL Family Disco Party, to which you are all invited of course, and which I have to attend because I am one of the host/sponsors.

I have a copy of the book to loan out (and a copy of the DVD too) as I have already read it, and I could give you a ride Pauline if you still need one. I have a bin of toys (blocks, puppets, etc.) that I could bring to the community room to entertain any kiddos that come along...

I'm happy to host in my living room too..

More book club suggestions:

Original Wisdom
The Fifth Sacred Thing
The Red Tent
The Invitation
OK I'm applying for August 4th, Saturday, 3PM (is that time better?). As far as I know, it's open, so I'll be applying for this tomorrow provided most of you can come at that time.
