Did your peanut allergic children show allergies to your breastmilk when you ate peanuts? I cut out milk because of it giving my son (6weeks old) tummy aches. Then, I had some peanuts one day. A few hours later, he started crying and screaming with a tummy ache and his cheeks both turned bright red. I'm kind of scared to test it just yet, but I will in a few months. I'm just curious how your breastfed peanut allergic kids did when you ate peanuts.

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would not test it, if you mean by eating peanuts. I would just avoid peanuts totally. I have a peanut allergic child, and looking back I realized that he probably did react to it in my milk. I didn't eat it often, but there were a few times that he had intense, inconsolable crying (and he was normally my very laidback baby), and I think it likely could have been that. One time for example was after I had eaten Chinese food.

Thanks for your responses. Momofmine, if I dont' test it, how would I know for sure if that was the cause? If it is the cause, then it'll suck for him to have those hours of misery, but then I'd have something more to go on. I'll run it by my ped as well in a few weeks. I would have thought he was just having a rough day except for the bright red, bumpy cheeks. I'm crossing my fingers that it's not peanuts.

Thanks again.

If it were any other food, I would say go ahead and test it. But peanuts are one of the most common anaphylactic allergies, and each time you consume an IgE allergen, the reactions can get worse. You could always have a blood test done (RAST) to check for peanuts, although they're not 100% accurate at that age.

Are you needing the protein source in your diet? Can you try a different type of nut, or eat seeds or beans instead?

I just found this thread and thought I would share my experience. DS2 has never had peanuts directly. He DID react to it in my milk--screaming and writhing with obvious stomach pain. I was completely clueless until we did allergy testing. He had multiple allergies but peanuts was the worst and was the only food that I hadn't tried removing from my diet. My son has never had a dangerous reaction from bm but definitely had a significant amount of pain from it. (The allergist estimates that he has a 95% of anaphylaxis if he ate peanuts directly.)
