On Monday my ds, who was born last Wed., had his first ped. checkup. Even though my ped. is young, hip, and up on all the new info, I was afraid she'd try to retract him or something. BTW, the general practitioner who examined him in the hospital told me to gently retract in the bath. Of course, Dh and I just kind of rolled our eyes. Anyway, the ped. didn't even touch his penis. Also, on the info sheet that she gave us for infant care said to NEVER try to retract or push back the foreskin. I was so happy that I have a ped. who actually knows what is going on!

Isn't it great when you have an informed, open-minded doctor for your child? We LOVE our Ped - she practiced in England for a decade and when we told her we didn't want to circ she told us she was glad - there was no medical reason to and it interferes with bf'ing. Of course, she's never even touched his penis

I wish our Ped would refuse to perform them but the circ rate where we live is literally over 90% so I can see that she would lose a lot of patients.

Oh, and despite the high circ rate and receiving incorrect care information in our Lamaze class (where we were the ONLY parents who were not going to circ
all 3 nurses I came in contact during our hospital stay with gave us correct care (do not retract) info! We did receive an unecessary cathedar when he was in the hospital with pneumonia however -our Ped was upset when she found out the next day - it didn't lead to any infections, thank goodness...

I'm sure we'll come in contact with more ignorant health care workers some time in his life, but so far not too bad!

This really upsets me. Why did you not say anything to the gp? How many other parents is he going to tell this to? No doubt some actually will believe him, then once boys get infections, swelling and redness, he'll say: see, that's why it's best to circumcise...

Sorry colaga. I had just given birth and was not mentally/emotionally able to really say much to anyone at all. Dh didn't say anything because he didn't know. I later told him to NEVER retract the foreskin. I have since talked to my midwife, who runs the hospital birth center. I told her about the misinformation the doctor gave us and she said she would speak to the dr. about it. Unfortunately, ds was the only boy born there for a long time who wasn't circed. It's a very small, rural hospital.
