We´re a co-sleeping, extended BFing (22 months and going strong), baby -and toddler- wearing, delayed vax family moving to NW DC very soon and I'd like to ask you recommendations for a Ped.

thank you!

Hi, I've posted this before on another thread, but this is a compilation of ped's posted on another AP group I'm in-hope it helps (my comments in bold) :

Bernstein, Paxton, Witkin, Feldman & Buckley - a group practice of
pediatricians on University Blvd. near Four Corners. Quite a few people
recommend it. Dr. Feldman and Nurse Practioner Tamara Buckely seem to be
the most popular ones. One person said Dr. Witkin is the least favorite:
301/681-6730. We used to use this practice- totally fine, but somewhat mainstream. Ie, equally supportive of bf and formula but don't encourage one over the other, (but they have a LC so that's great!), some of the docs were miffed at my desire to selectively/delay vax, don't necessarily encourage cosleeping but I just never mentioned it- definitely see the NP/LC Tamara Buckley though, she is the best one there)

Kensington Pediatrics in Kensington - Dr. June Fusner's practice. The Nurse
Practitioner Nancy Hoover is esp. recommended. They have a holistic
approach and can recommend homepathic treatments for those who are
interested. 10400 Connecticut Ave., #215 Kensington, MD 20895
301-949-8860 This is who we use now and LOVE them. They ususally take the wait and see approach and rarely prescribe drugs (in our experience). However, they are not taking new pts right now to my knowledge, except for newborns- but keep them in mind in case they can take on new pts in the future!

Dr. Patricia Armstrong (She's changed her last name, but I forgot what to.) 321 Flannery Lane, Silver Spring, MD 20904
301-879-3650

Dr. Robert Ginsberg (family practice)
Holistic approach. 301-989-8892.

If you really want a good holistic ped and are willing to trek to
Columbia...
Dr. Margaret Sears-DeMenthon, 301-854-1008 - website:
www.searspediatrics.com

Also, there's a Dr Razi on R St. in DC- never been to her, but I hear she is great and very holistic. maybe someone else has the contact info or you could google it.

There is just so few choices of AP-friendly peds in this area -- very sad. I have been trying to get my son into Dr. Fusner but she has been closed to new patients for quite some time. Oh well.

We use Dr. Razi and love her. She is not always taking new patients and I think the new patients she takes are newborns.
Her phone number is: (202) 333-1774.

If we didn't use her, we would have gone Dr. Fusner. Dr. Fusner did a lot of homeopathic training with Dr. Razi. People rave about her nurse practitioner, Nancy, who is also a LC.

Both also know Dr. Kulp who is very personable and people just love him. I think they may all cover for eachother. Dr. Kulp doesn't have the homeopathic background the others have, but he consults them I think. He is "open" to non-mainstream approaches.

Hope that helps and I hope you find a ped that you like!

Thank you all so much! at least I have a list and if they are not taking new patients they may be able to recommend someone else. We're moving in two days so this came just in time!

We LOVE Dr. Tsitouris in Rockville, even though it's a bit of a hike for us, she's well worth the drive.

301-990-6290
15201 Shady Grove Road Suite 201
Rockville MD 20850

Also, we previously went to Dr Armstrong in Silver Spring and I had really liked her and her approach, but last summer, when I decided it was time for my 4 year old to get her first vaccine (tetanus) she did not return several phone calls and efforts on my behalf to make an appointment.

Also, just FYI, this year I had to take my daughter to Children's Hospital for stitches. They asked if she was up to date on her vaccinations and they gave me no trouble at all when I responded, "No, she's not. We're on a selective vaccination schedule." It was a pleasant surprise not to get a lecture from them.

Is this Margaret Sears non-vax or delayed vax friendly? Anyone know of any peds who are holistic, ap friendly, tolerant of non-vax or delayed vax in the DC metro area or outer suburbs?? I am willing to drive a distance if necessary.

Dr. Razi rarely takes new patients. I know a few people who go to her and all except one feel that she's quite a control freak. Also, her office staff is downright rude. I used to feel sad that I wasn't able to get my son into see her. Not anymore.

We used to go to June Fusner before she went solo and were pretty pleased with her, save the one time where she hardly looked at my child and diagnosed him with coxsackie virus. As it turns out, he was actually having a severe reaction to mosquito bites. My guess is that she was seriously overworked, though, in the busy, multi-doctor practice. Our other visits with her were great.

We go to Whole Child Pediatrics in Ashburn; primarily because I love Dr. Bunger. She's not as holistic as I like, but she's wonderful with my son, very AP-friendly, and very tolerant of not vaccinating (which we don't). The other 2 doctors are good, as well, though I don't care for them as much as Dr. Bunger.

There's also Diane Halpin. She's with a practice in Falls Church. I hear great things about her; not so great things about the rest of the practice. I think she's gone down to part-time recently - had a baby recently, I believe - but she might be a possibility.

Thanks for your recs DragonFly. I have actually thought about Fusner, but I am a bit concerned that she is overworked and really super busy. My little bit of experience with her since she's solo is not that she's had more time for you... but maybe someone can correct me... also does she make you wait an inordinate amount of time?

And still looking to hear more about that Margaret Sears... ItsyBitsy25 are you out there? Specifically, is she vax friendly, etc...

And still would love to hear any other suggestions....I am willing to travel for the right doc...
thanks!!

Dr. Annop Tan(Tan is actually short for a very long last name- so it might be listed differently in your providers) is a fantastic doctor in Silver Spring, Md. He is at the corner of Dennis Avenue and Georgia Ave. His telephone number is 301-681-1508.

I would not call him "holistic"(in fact I'm not sure exactly what this means! lol)

But I've known him for probably 20 years(I saw him as a kid) and am now thrilled to be taking my children to him.

He has never batted an eye at our selective vaccinations(and I'm willing to bet he wouldn't even if we didn't vac at all), doesn't say anything about extended nursing of anything like that. Heck we don't keep the well child schedule or anything like that, just go whenever(normally when sick- we are always behind in the vacs we do do!) lol. He saw my children within 48 hours after my birth center births and thinks that is great. I plan to have him check the baby out after my homebirth in october also.

He is from Thailand and very traditional and the nicest man. He bows when he first comes in to the room at every appointment. His nurses are so friendly and love children. If I have a really sick kid, they will normally tell me to come right over and they squeeze me in. He has 5(6? I'm not sure) children of his own(probably grown up/teenagers by now). I love that he has his own practice. He knows us, and we don't rotate through a zillion doctors who don't care. I know if he ever goes on vacation or something he does have some back up doctors who are on call for his patients.

I can't say enough about the man!

Again about the holistic thing, I don't think he would prescribe herbs or other natural things for healing. He does prescribe antibiotics and all that. So he might not be exactly what you are looking for.

Good luck finding someone!

Hi, yep, I'm here! Actually, that was a list of info I had from another group, so I don't have personal experience with all those docs, including Dr Sears, sorry! I guess you would have to call as ask them specifically what their view is.

Re: Dr Fusner- (we were there today!)- we've never waited a long time in that office- 2 other families other than us is that most that has ever been in the waiting room, and usually, like today, there was no one else waiting (one other person being seen at the time), and usually both the dr and nancy are busy seeing pts. Whenever I call, they call me back very soon.

I haven't felt rushed- actually, Nancy spends SO much time with us sometimes that the office staff has to come in and remind her that the next appt is waiting!

I don't know how they feel about totally NOT vaxing, as we do delayed/selective, but they are totally open to doing whatever I want- in fact, they were pretty wary about vaxing my son at all at the time, given his issues- I am the one who has to request that he be given a shot, no one ever mentions it till I ask for him to have one!

And, as a side note, just because it is encouraging to me, given what you hear about other peds- my son is super small, nowhere near even the 0 percentile on the growth chart, and they are totally cool with it- he had all kinds of testing done and everything is normal, and I am knowledgeable about diet, etc so they have always been really encouraging to me about it, just saying that's the way he is and not giving me some kind of guilt trip! It's such a relief.

for the responses - I really appreciate them. I'm hating life about having to find a ped; I thought I had the best one in the whole wide world, actually he was a family doc, and he was great, but he retired
so now I have to start all over...so if anyone else has any holistic, ap & nonvax friendly recs for ped, family doc, or alternative type doc, please let me know - oh also would like home birth friendly too
thanks!

Hi...our baby is due anyday now. We have chosen Dr. Sears as our pediatrician and are planning on delaying all vaccinations at this time, particualrly hep B. If anyone is still looking for information on Dr. Sears' attitude on delayed vaccinations, I can update you with our experiences very soon.

Dr. Rita Kolycius is in Gaithersburg. 301-869-6461. It is a solo practice. She is very open to delayed/selective vaccinations. I don't know if I would call her AP but she doesn't ask prying questions. I like when I have an emergency question outside of office hours - I call and get her directly - on her cell phone.
