I am desperately seeking a pediatrician, or even a family doc, who supports the decision to delay vax (or non-vax, havent decided), supports breast feeding and co-sleeping, and will stop telling me horror stories about non-circumcised penises! I am willing to travel somewhat, as I'm realizing Maine in general, and Central maine specifically is not a hotbed of progressive thinking. I'm looking in the Waterville/ Skowhegan/ Newport area. I suppose I could travel to Augusta, if need be. I'm due in 4 weeks, and the search is becoming narrower and narrower. Any suggestions would be so appreciated. No one seems to have ever heard of a doctor who doesnt vaccinate. I feel like I'm in the 1950's.

I'm curious to hear what others say. We just moved to the area and I'll be soon looking for a ped or FP for my boys (who have intact penises!). I've never had an issue with that with any of our doctors, but maybe I've just been lucky.

Hi. MA lurker here, but I had to post. A friend of mine and her family just moved to Maine. Her dh is a family doctor in Waterville. I happen to know he is non-circ friendly, pro extending bf'ing and open to co-sleeping. I do believe he is pro-vax, but he is also believes in leaving personal healthcare decisions up to the patient. His name is Dr. John Bonney. Here's a quote from the newspaper article that my friend emailed me: “I see myself as an educator, giving my patients the best information I can about their options, and then helping them decide what they need to do based upon their own beliefs and experiences. The more involved a patient is in their own health, the better.”

I don't have his office address or phone number, but I can find out if you like and pm you. Since his practice is new, you shouldn't have any trouble getting in for an appointment.

We live in Bangor and see a wonderful doc in Orono. Not sure how close this is to you but if you are interested, I can PM her name and number to you.

Thanks! I am doing well, and fairly squirming with anticipation and nerves! I feel I'm one of the few "alternative" minded moms (to-be) in this area, and I still havent found a ped I'm okay with. There was one in the Bangor area who was recommended to me, hmmm...Dr Buck? He sounds very open-minded about the vax issue, whereas most others might not "bother" me about it, I'd really like to find someone who SUPPORTS me. Apparently, this Dr is educated on both sides of the issue, which I really like. I'm hoping he'll take me/lil baby on. I'm waiting for a call back from his office to even see if he'll accept another patient... All the good ones are gone! Bangor is about an hour drive for me, but I guess I'm willing, because its really worth it to me to find the right ped/fp. If it doesnt work out with this one, maybe I'll try to contact your doc, canadianchick. I appreciate it.
