I started in school last fall. In the fall and spring I got "Federal Pell Grant 1" (exactly what it says on my school thingy). I assumed I got all I could get for the year (with it starting over in the fall). But I am taking summer classes anyway, I just paid for them out of pocket. So today I get an email telling me they reviewed my FAFSA and to check my account. So I did and it says I got a "Federal Pell Grant 2" for summer. Nobody ever said I could get it for summer too! So what's the difference between the "1" (which I got in fall and spring) and "2" (which I got for summer).<br><br>
On a side note.... I also got an email last week saying I had an additional grant from fall and summer that I have no idea why I didn't get it at the time (it's called "Federal SEOG") so I have another $400 coming from that.<br><br>
With both of those (the SEOG and the summer pell grant) I am so stoked because I made the hard decision to stop work during the summer to stay home with ds (and do online classes). But I was having a hard time getting over the not making money part. Now with these grants I will "make" more than I would have working!

I'm not sure about all of that - but I've also received a pell grant for summer (after getting the max amount for fall and spring).<br><br>

<a href="http://www.campusexplorer.com/college-advice-tips/1FA6316F/Pell-Grant-Can-Be-Used-for-Summer-College-Courses-Starting-in-Summer-2010/" target="_blank">This</a> is the only thing I can find on it, which basically says that because of something Obama did there was a change in the Pell for summer, allowing people who have 24 credit hours (before the summer) with passing grades and is enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for the summer are eligible for addition Pell grants. I too had the max for fall/spring, which is why I was surprised to see this today!

SEOG is another federal grant - I sometimes got them during my undergrad years, randomly. They're like Pell grants, but the amount is much more limited and schools have to kick in a percentage. I think they're supposed to go to the poorest students...

Just wanted to update this thread with a little LOL..... so, my last week of work was memorial week. I worked that wednesday after memorial day and that was my last day. Since I would have worked on memorial day (but my work was closed) I should have gotten that as a paid holiday. The week after that was supposed to be used for my week paid vacation (for each year you work there you get a week paid vacation- back in February I asked my boss if I could use that week as my week paid and she approved, I didn't know at that time that I wouldn't be working for the summer). Anyway, we went on vacation and when we got back I went to my work last friday to get my last paycheck (should have been a paycheck from memorial week with me being paid for memorial day and the wednesday) and a paycheck for my week paid vacation. When I picked it up I only had 1 paycheck for just the wednesday that I worked. So basically my boss screwed me out of memorial day pay and my weeks paid vacation.<br><br>
I was livid. I still am but it definitely cemented that I am not coming back in the fall (my boss had told me to come back in late July and see if she had an opening for me to come back). I turned in my key. They can kiss my a$$. I'm not going to be treated like dog poo and then come back to it for more. I told as many of the employees on my way out that I could (morale there is already in the pits.... posted a huge thread in TAO about the stuff going on there... and people are already looking for new jobs so they can quit).<br><br>
Anyway, so I was upset about that and trying to figure out what I'm going to do in the fall. I need some sort of income but I also need flexibility. I'm going to apply for a job in the school district as a sub teacher and sub para that way I have all the days off my ds has.<br><br>
I logged onto my school email yesterday and got GREAT news. For some reason they decided they were giving me another fed SEOG grant for the summer.... for another $1000! SWEET! Since I was only working part time (in school full time) at a crappy low paying job that's about 8 weeks of take home pay for me!!! So even if I don't find a job right when ds starts back at school I'll still be okay <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

Did you call your old workplace? When DH left his last job, we had to call about the accrued vacation pay they didn't pay him and the insurance premiums they still took out though they'd cancelled our insurance. We did get the money back, but I think a lot of times people just hope you won't make a stink about it.
