Our beautiful girl is here!

Penelope (Poppy) Rose
Born 6/19/08
6 lb, 3 oz
19.5 inches

I started having contractions early Wednesday morning and had some show a couple of times that day. The contractions were extremely sporadic and irregular all day Wednesday and most of Thursday. DD (almost 6) and I had a nice day together though--we went to her dance class, went out to lunch, then soaked our feet in her kiddie pool. She distracted me during contractions, and even gave me a little massage. Finally in the early evening on Thursday I was having a hard time doing anything but concentrating on each wave, so we called the midwife and the doula and headed for the hospital. My contractions were about 5 minutes apart in the car, but we were nearly out of gas so we had to stop! We threw a $10 bill at the guy, got the needle above the red and headed out again.

We arrived at the hospital at 7:30. At 7:39 the nurse hooked me up to the monitors and said she wanted to have me on those for about 20 minutes. At about 7:50 she checked my cervix and said I was 5 cm. ("Two days and only a freakin' 5!", is what I was thinking to myself.) I was extremely uncomfortable in the bed, so she moved me to a rocking chair, still on the monitors. The nurse went to ge my abx (GBS +) and when she came back, I told her I wanted to go to the bathroom before she put in the heplock.

In the bathroom I had a very powerful contraction, sat down on the toilet and had a loose bm. I got back up and had a contraction that had me sweating, nauseous and shakey. I started moaning. The nurse came to the door and asked me if I was ok, and I said, "I can't do the abx. I'll sign an AMA!" (panting and moaning) "Do you know the risks to the baby?" (blah, blah, blah) Then I sat back down on the toilet and told her I had to go again. She said, "are you pushing?" I said, "I can't help it." I reached down and felt a big old water balloon coming out of me. Then I said, "it's my bag of waters." I stood up and it popped, but not a lot of fluid came out. The nurse was saying, "let's get you to the bed." Apparently my husband came in and was trying to get me to the bed too. I said, "catch the baby!" "You don't want to have your baby here." "Catch the baby!" "Can you take a step forward?" "Catch the baby!" She left the room. I yelled at dh, "Catch the baby!" I said, "I've got the head. Somebody catch the baby!" (I was holding onto the rail next to the toilet with the other hand.) Then the nurse came in and caught the baby! (Finally! Apparently she had stepped outside the door to get gloves and press the panic button. She got one glove on.) A team of nurses immediately arrived, but I only had eyes for my sweet girl.

She was instantly screaming and pink and clean and beautiful and so small. Everyone helped us to the bed. The cord was kind of short, so she didn't quite reach my breast with the placenta still in, but I got to hold her there until the mw arrived about 25 minutes later. I had a couple of stitches and violent tremors for awhile, but we're both doing great now. My midwife and doula introduced themselves to each other, "Hi, I was supposed to be the doula." "Hi, I was supposed to be the midwife." Eveyone had a good laugh and we were the talk of the hospital for awhile. Apparently they don't have a lot of babies in the bathroom. Who knew? I thought that hand rail next to the toilet was just right.

I feel so lucky to have a healthy baby. I have been slowly letting go of all the fears that were unexpressed throughout the pregnancy. I am also happy to have had a great, intervention-free birth. I feel so much more emotionally content and settled than after my pitocin/epidural birth.

Penelope Rose was born 14 minutes after I was measured at 5 cm, so let that be encouraging to anyone who thinks they're dilating too slowly!

Penelope Rose
Little Fingers

This is so true! Getting to 5 is the hard part. It often goes very fast after that. Congratulations, she's beautiful!
