I've know that Pennyroyal essential oil is toxic (an abortifacient and can cause liver and lung damage), but what I can't find out is if this is taken internally or inhaled in large quantities, or if even using a small amount as an insect repellant is toxic. The information I turn up seems incomplete and confusing. Can anyone set me straight? This oil seems to be the only one that repels the really insipid ant invasion we chronically suffer.

edited to add: I use a small amount undiluted on a Q-tip applied directly to the ant's entry site, when ds is not around and the house is open.

pennyroyal is a mint.

I would think that the small amounts you are using and since it is not topical, would not be a problem. I have messed with pennyroyal plants often at the farm and never had a problem.

However, if you are worried, i think that other mint oils might give the same benefits.
