Haven't posted in a long while, but now I'm back and asking for h.e.l.p. I've been at ease with the whole non-vax issue for several years now - ds just turned 5. However, my parents HATE the fact that he isn't vaxxed. Now my dad has started in with trying to guilt me into getting the pertussis vax. It's to the point that I don't even want to talk to him at all. His basic argument is that whooping cough is now an epidemic and CA and working its way to other states. He had it as a child and almost died as a toddler (this would've been in the early 40's). From everything I've read pertussis is very dangerous in infants 6 mo and younger. Nevertheless, my dad will not stop trying to make me feel horrible about this and the last thing he said to me was "well, I hope you're not sorry"

Here's my concern, I realize it's on the upswing and I really do want to be prepared for it but I'm not sure what to do. I've read previous threads that mention SA - to bowel tolerance. So I'm ordering this tomorrow from Bronson. Is this something that you would give on a daily basis too for general health? I guess I just need to know that others have gone through this and that it can be managed proactively if your child does get it.

This is basically what I've been doing to keep my ds healthy...does it look ok, anything I can add/delete in your opinion?

Multi vitamin - from organic whole foods

Vitamin C 500mg /day

Prebiotics - to help with food digestion - recommended by N.D.

Fish Oil

Viamin D3 - but what dosage???

Probiotics - need a good brand you can buy at local stores ie: Whole Foods/Sprouts/TJ's etc

Thank you so much everyone I so appreciate your help

I'm not very much help, but I'm in Cali and like you I hear and see all the Pertussis uproar going on.

When DD was born, I made sure to get ahold of some SA and have it on hand

for if and when we need it. I think your on the right path by keeping your son in top health, so that

his immune system is in great condition and his body can fight off any infections.

I'm not sure if he should be taking the SA right now to keep WC at bay. I think it's something you start once needed.

Other Mamas here can be of better help with that though.

I of course don't want DD to contract WC, but if she does I like being prepared and ready to fight the good fight.

rare that I can answer a question here, lol, but I know SA is "sodium ascorbate." A buffered (still unsure what the means, lol) form of vitamin C. I think people megadose(? can you tell I'm feeling unsure about a LOT?!) if symptoms of WC are seen and in some cases it really reduces the severity of the cough.

I myself just bought the NutriBiotic brand (no GMOs) but I know the NOW brand is also popular. Just want to have it on hand as we've not vaxxed, either.

I'm in So. Cal, and yes, pertussis is on the upswing and scary, but the fact is that the 10 babies that passed from pertussis in California this year were of, from what I understand, counties that have extensive pesticide spraying programs, and the infants were of immigrant families who may have been farm workers.

Obviously any time a child dies it is a tragedy, and by no means do I intend to minimize what has happened in California. But out of the 6000+ confirmed cases in the state, there have only been 10 deaths. Considering the DTaP vaccine does not prevent transmission, and the vaccine is not considered fully effective until after the first 3 doses, at 6 months (and even then it's, at best, 85% effective), I'm not convinced it's the crisis the media and medical establishment like to tout it as.

That said, my youngest had one dose at 2 months, then I stopped having her vaxed, then I submitted to another at 14 months because I was scared too! My 5.5 year old was fully vaccinated, and after a reaction to his 5th DTaP, I wish I hadn't had him get that 5th dose.

Thank you so much for everyone that's replied thus far. I am ordering the SA to have on hand just in case. From what I can tell in my state (AZ) there's been quite a few cases but no deaths. A handful of infacts under 6 mo. have been hospitalized and recovered.

I'm pretty sure my 18 month old DS2 has whooping cough right now. We chose not to do antibiotics (since it doesn't help the person who is sick) and are treating with sodium ascorbate (SA) vitamin C powder to bowel tolerance, probiotics, flaxseed oil, vitamin D, and homeopathic Drosera 30c. DS is about 23 lbs and I'm adding 1/4-1/2 tsp of SA to all his drinks and watery foods (yogurt, applesauce, cottage cheese, soup), he's taking 1 Culturelle and 1 Nature's Way Optima probiotic capsule daily in his yogurt along with 1 tsp of Spectrum brand flaxseed oil. I give him 2 drops of Carlson vitamin D drops (4000IU) on his pacifier each day and he's taking 5 Drosera 30c homeopathic tablets 3 times a day. He's still nursing a ton so I'm also taking SA to bowel tollerance. I usually add 2 teaspoons (8000mg) of SA to a glass of orange juice and drink it 3 times a day. That's 24,000mg and I still haven't gotten any diarrhea from it. DS definately improved after starting the SA and homeopathic remedy. We had run out of the homeopathic remedy for a day and a half and he was coughing a ton during that time. Once I bought some more his cough dramatically decreased. Source Naturals is the brand of SA that I'm using and we got it on Amazon.
