The Surge's true benefit for Dubya Inc....successfully keeping the Iraq fiasco off the front pages and near the backend of the nightly newscast...and keeping Americans dim on the isse:

Twenty-eight percent of the public is aware that nearly 4,000 U.S. personnel have died in Iraq over the past five years, while nearly half thinks the death tally is 3,000 or fewer and 23 percent think it is higher, according to an opinion survey released yesterday.

The survey, by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, found that public awareness of developments in the Iraq war has dropped precipitously since last summer, as the news media have paid less attention to the conflict. In earlier surveys, about half of those asked about the death tally responded correctly.

Related Pew surveys have found that the number of news stories devoted to the war has sharply declined this year, along with professed public interest. "Coverage of the war has been virtually absent," said Pew survey research director Scott Keeter, totaling about 1 percent of the news hole between Feb. 17 and 23.

I wonder what Americans estimates of the number of Iraqi civilians killed since the invasion would be. And how that figure would translate into Americans killed if we faced similar casualty rates here.

Iraqi Death Estimates since the invasion... 1.2 million

Total Iraq Population 27.5 million

% killed: 4.36%

If same percentage applied to America it would be over 13 million Americans had died.

http://www.justforeignpolicy.org/ira...planation.html

I know it's in a way snarkiness on my part, but my first thought was of Iraqi casualties too ... or rather that I haven't known Americans to be particularly aware of the number of fatalities caused by this war yet.

Well, it is a good bet that if most Americans are unaware about the casualties suffered by U.S. forces in Iraq mission (and I'd wager Afghanistan too), the Iraqi casualty count is not high on stuff to consider.

Anyhow, here is a link to the Pew study:
http://pewresearch.org/pubs/762/poli...owledge-update
