We got the family a keyboard for Hannukah this year. I know a little basic piano. Not too much, but I wanted to help my daughter learn a few little songs, and just see if she develops an interest. She specifically asked for a piano this year. I've been looking at materials though, and I realized alot of it is geared for someone who already knows letters or numbers. It is basically translating the notes into letters symbols to give the name of the note or numbers symbols to tell what finger to use. Seems kind of complicated. Would it be better for me to just learn a song, and then have her learn it by ear and example?

one of my kids learned with these

(was typing on the run yesterday, wanted to add...)

These are colorforms-like stickers that go on the keys.(Totally removable.) They're color-coded to the music book which has the notes on the staff in the standard way but the notes are colored to match the keys. The letter of the note is also on the sticker.

In the beginning, the student can play by following the colors. When they know the letters, they can play by note.

You used to be able to download a free lesson book--you'd have to check out the site to see if that's still available.

We got a keyboard for the kids when they were 1 and 2 and dh labeled the middle range with the letters for a C scale. As they've learned to recognize their letters, they've associated them with the notes they hear when they play with the keyboard. It's a pretty organic way to learn and is how I learned to read music in the very beginning.

My oldest dd has really enjoyed Piano for Preschoolers: http://www.pianoforpreschoolers.com/
It's very simple and gives instant gratification. And by default they learn to play by ear. I have tons of piano training and when she began to show interest in learning, I went the classical route, with all the Alfred books, but it really wasn't working for her. So we are doing Piano for Preschoolers for now until she is ready for the Alfred books again.
