Pick me up / Put me down

DS has started this thing lately that is driving me crazy. He will cry to be picked up. When I do, he squirms to be let down. When I put him down, he cries to be picked up. This can go on for hours at a time, 3 hours last night. He's always done this to some extent, but now it is getting to be constant. I don't think he thinks it's a game, because he's definitely not happy about it. It's just like he doesn't know what he wants.

But it drives me absolutely crazy.
Thoughts?

How old?

This can be an expression of frustration. So, growth spurt, teething, poor sleep, etc.

My DD does the on boob/off boob thing so I understand.

My 11 month old son has been doing this a lot recently, and I figured out that what he usually wanted was for me to hold his hands so he could walk (he's learning to walk right now). It's rough when they can't communicate what they want; sometimes we figure it out and sometimes we don't.

My son has also been doing the on boob/ off boob thing, too. He wants to eat, but there are so many other interesting things going on.
My 7 month old has been doing something similar, but mostly for fun -- he thinks it's hilarious to make me pick him up and then to immediately turn to DH and strain in his direction until DH gets him and then to immediately turn back to me.

I love the idea of babes playing jokes on us.

Now I'm going to wonder about this a lot.
