picking a pump

if i'm only going to pump once or twice a day do i really have to shell out the big bucks for an electric? i usualy work about 8 hours and only live 5 minutes from work so i'm planning to feed right before i leave and as soon as i get home then pump during my break.

technically i could pump twice once during each 15 minute unpaid break....we don't normally take those but i could and nobody would mind

or i could take a slightly longer break at lunch to fit in eating and pumping

I used Medela's pump n style and ran it into the ground (exclusively pumped for 2 months, worked FT at times). However, at times I needed to use a less expensive pump or a manual pump.

Compared to the double pump electric Medela, those other pumps were such a pain! Took forever with the manual and was painful with the cheapo pump.

I shelled out the $ for Medela's newest pump.

FWIW, I'd try to pump twice in those 8 hours. I know my supply would've gone down if I didn't pump at least every 3-4 hours. Don't forget commuting time.
I bought a used electric (A Medela PISA) to pump once a day. (Not everyone is okay with this.) I started with a hand pump and honestly by the second day my hand felt like it was going to fall off. And I don't work at a computer. It will totally seem worth it.

working an 8 hour shift and living 5 minutes from work pumping once during work would actually be evry 4 hours....

with my last baby i only worked like 5-6 hours at the time and so only pumped once while there... i had a battery opperated pump and it was such a pita....

i was looking at the avent isis on the go pack.....it says you use the handle less than with other manual pumps

For daily use, even once or twice, I'd look into the Ameda Purely Yours/Lansinoh Double Electric. comparable to the Medela (I like it better actually), and you can get it for $150 if you don't get a bag/backpack with it (you can use any old bag you have around the house to carry it around).

This is what I use and for the price it's pretty good (though I have never used the fancier types, so I can't comment there). My only problem with it is that it's not hands-free (which may be the case with all pumps for all I know). So I usually pump one breast at a time so I have a hand free to do something else. But it doesn't take very long and it's easy to clean and keep sterile (and pass on to someone else later, since no milk stays in the unit, ever).

I just wanted to add in that you can even buy this pump used. The milk doesn't go through the motor.

The purely yours works great with an Easy Expressions Bustier. And yeah, it's the only pump I'd consider buying used, but the price difference between new and used isn't all that much so for the warranty I'd go new personally.

Ah, so you've done this before.

Sorry to project my experiences on to you. I NEVER got out on time, sometimes wasn't able to pump on time, etc. I NEVER had a 5 min commute. Therefore, I always made sure to schedule at least 2 pumping sessions to ensure I emptied regularly.

I'm still partial to my Medela :p
