So, we're having a thunderstorm right now. I'm scheduled to pick up (e.g. walk three blocks) my son at school in about 1/2 an hour. When I pick him up, I have to pack up the baby and the 2 year old to do so. My 2 year old has recently become terrified of thunderstorms. There are no neighbors at home right now who could sit with the kids while I run to the school.<br><br>
What would you do? Any advice to help terrified kids?

Do you have an mp3 player or something similar that he/she could listen to to distract them? Good luck, I hope the storm stops before you have to leave <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

That's a good idea. Unfortunately, he likes to destroy headphones. Maybe I can put a few of his favorite books with him in the stroller.

what about some sort of radio that doesn't need headphones? You could put it out of his reach, but turn it up loud enough for him to hear.

I'm assuming that's not an option, or she would be doing it.

I don't have any advice, but I have lots of memories of walking home in rain/thunder storms. I even have memories of wearing garbage bags to keep from getting soaked, lol. And not being allowed to use an umbrella because we could be electrocuted.<br><br>
Try to make a game out of it? Have fun pretending to blow away in the wind?

Not an option as the car is parked further away than the school. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> (I'm in NYC)

Oh! That's good. DS2 is very much into blowing things... candles... blowing air in our face, etc.

We got caught in a rain storm a couple of times. I made it seem like it was oh so exciting to be out in storm. You know, complete with saying "Wheeeee!" and "This is so fun!"<br><br>
It actually worked. Sorry you're going to be getting soaked though.<br><br>
We have the same storms today. I admit that I didn't take ds to school today. We were both too exhausted.

Well, we just got back. The thunder had stopped by then... so it was just rain... which my kids love. I just put had them put on rain boots and ponchos over their winter coats...and they had loads of fun. Whew!
