I woke up around 4AM to a swollen, draining, pink right eye. Does this sound like pinkeye? I've never had it before.

:

I don't like it.

Could be, but I also get this when my sinuses are plugged up. Have you had any congestion lately?

Yep ... I'm just getting over it myself. My very first case and it SUCKS. It is highly contagious, so:

* wash your hands constantly
* try to sleep so that the drainage from your right eye doesn't come into contact with your left one, or it'll spread (says the voice of experience : )
* change/wash your pillowcase(s) daily until the infection is gone
* there are some homeopathic treatments, but they didn't seem to help me much -- I ended up with antibiotic eyedrops which have helped tremendously

Feel better soon.

I am currently in the beginning of my second bout with this in about 3 weeks. It stinks. DO wash your pillowcase everyday and get to a doctor to get the drops or gels--as it won't really go away on its own. The last person to have it in my house was 2 weeks ago....so I am just floundered as to how I got it again. None of my students have had it in 2 weeks as well. It is just really prevalent for some reason this winter and it stinks. I hate the gel....a week of walking around with blurry vision. yuck.

If you wear glasses, wash them too - No contacts or eye makeup and avoid the area with anything! You could even infect you face lotion, ect, so be careful, And you may want to wash well/replace EVERYTHING that comes in contact with your face. Also, wash well around your fingernails. Pink eye is highly highly highly contagious, and I tend to get it at least 2x if I am not really careful. Use warm washcloths to soothe your eyes (while they are closed) and then wash the yucky cloths in HOT water. You might wash to wash all of your face/body towels and even pillowcases and sheets daily until it has been gone for a few days.

Good luck! I hate hate hate pink eye.

We have always been able to fight off pink eye without any drops or antibiotics. I would up your Vit C, Zinc and Echinacea, and keep it clean with washcloths and lots of handwashing.

It should go away in 3 days with our without antibiotics. It's less apt to spread if you use antibiotics. (That's from a recent press from England)

If it is quite painful and you were contacts, you might want to see your doctor. You could have scratched your cornea. I did that once and wowsers did that hurt!

Try a warm washcloth to the eye. That might help soothe it!

I've never treated pinkeye with antibiotics. It always goes on it's own. I have been told by my doctor that most cases of pinkeye are actually viral and not bacterial. So yep, washing hands, not wearing contacts and warm washcloths always worked for me!
