A ham bone cooked with them is the best flavoring possible, IMO, but when one isn't available...

I like oregano, garlic, onion

OR, cooked bacon and some bacon grease added near the end of cooking (plus garlic and onion with the cooking).

I like cumin, chili powder, oregano, onion and garlic and fat. Lots of fat.

What kind of fat? Butter? I have that, but no bacon or pork fat.

I don't have a ham bone, but do have all the spices I am cooking the beans in the crockpot, I will go add them right now.

Thanks

We got into the habit of putting a slice of butter on top of the bean soup. Really good stuff.

They had great flavor, thanks for the help. I didn't put any fat in though but we ate them with cheese and sour cream in kind of taco salads. I think I will try some mashed today with butter like mentioned about kidney beans in the meatloaf thread.

Thanks again, never would have thought of oregano and those were the best beans I have made
