So what are you ladies planning on doing with your placentas? I am not really sure what I want to do with mine this time around.
With my first we cut the cord after it stopped pulsing and I looked at the placenta when I delivered it. Not really sure what became of it after that. With my second we cut the cord after I delivered the placenta and again, I looked at it then never saw it again. This time we will cut the cord after I deliver the placenta but then what?

I figured I would dry mine out and give it to someone as a 'gag' gift for Christmas...

Yes, I'm BAD, sorry couldn't pass that one up.

Actually, probably just throw it out or bury it. I don't know if I could eat it.

if we owned the place we are living in i would bring it home and plant it with a tree or the like....but alas, we don't own it and i don't want to plant it somewhere where we aren't going to be for more than a year or two...

don't think i could ever eat it...i knew someone who did after it was dried and put it in capsules and such but that's a bit much for me.....kudos to those who can.....

Yeah, I'm one of "those" girls who plans to eat it
.. or at least I hope to be. I had severe PPD w/dd, that placenta ended up in the hospital's incinerator. I wish I would've at least saved it to plant!

We're planning to cut it into strips, dehydrate it & grind up for some vegicaps. If it helps me even a little I'll be thankful I tried it. I just hope I'm not too squeamish to cut it up.... but I like that method better than putting it raw into a smoothie or something along those lines.

My midwife dried mine, grinded it up and put it in capsules. I took them to replenish my body of stuff that was lost during labor. Taking the capsules is supposed to help with PPD, milk production, and other things I can't remember. I've also been told it's a natural antibiotic and they last forever. I've even given them to friends when they felt depleted or lathargic. They're not gross and they don't smell, at least not to me. The placenta is so good for you it seems like such a waste to throw it away.

Good luck!!!

We are planning a hb, but I still haven't thought much about the placenta. I had a super fast labor with DD at the hospital and they really just whisked the placenta away. I was so preoccupied with DD that I didn't think much about it. I sort of regretted afterwards that I didn't get a good look at it. With this pregnancy I hope to bury the placenta under a new tree but that will somewhat depend on whether we are livining in a new house (house closing is still up in the air) or we are living in an apartment. If we are in an apartment I may try and freeze it and then bury at our new home. I'll have to bury it pretty deep though as we have 2 dogs who would probably derive some sick pleasure from digging it up and eating it.

I wonder if there is some risk to an RH - mom taking the capsules if her child is RH +. I know one is ingesting it vs a blood-to-blood mix but I would still wonder if that opens the door to developing antibodies. I think that would be my fear of encapsulating it.

I hadn't really thought of this until you brought it up... I'm Rh-, and if baby is + I'll be getting rhogam... so would it even matter if I ingested something w/ Rh+ blood in it?

Well, since my DD's placenta is still in our freezer, I guess her sister or brother's will join hers. Perhaps they can choose the fruit tree we intend use their placentas to nourish.

I love telling guests that they may help themselves to ice in our freezer the trays are stacked just above Xochi's placenta!

I was seriously thinking baout planting mine under the huge tree inour backyard ( our house was built in 1870, and the tree cna't be too much yonger than that
). We finally own a house and can consider it now.

I had never heard of ingesting it for PPD!! Thats wild!
I dont' know if I could go there, but I have to say this thread has made me think and laugh at the same time.

tammyswanson... :roflmao

omgosh you HAVE to post pictures later this year when you give it away, that cracked me up !!! *LOL*

My midwife doesn't do placenta preparation, but it looks like I've found somebody within driving distance who will make it into capsules, so I'll probably go that route.

I'm also planning (unless there is a reason why it would interfere with the encapsulation) on taking a little bit after birth and adding it to a smoothie.

I understand the 'oogy-factor' of it all for those who are grossed out by it, but I figure if it helps to prevent post partum depression, I'm all for it!

Me too. I did it last time and I really think I benefited from it.

That's almost exactly where I am right now. I really want to consume it but could not blend into a smoothie or otherwise eat it. Encapsulation should do okay and I hope it helps. I had severe PPD the first time around, and a bad blood loss (PPH) the second time. The placenta should help with either of those should they occur again.

From what others said in that long thread I mentioned earlier, you can't taste it in a smoothie at all. The women who talked about it used a 1" cube in a blender with tons of fruit, yogurt, milk, whatever, and said it was surprising that they couldn't taste it at all. It would help if you could get someone else to do the preparing.

I have a very sensitive stomach. If I *Know* it's in there, I won't be able to drink the smoothie.

Aside from that, I do know that this is something that I shouldn't consider to be gross, but the whole concept of eating a placenta is very new to me and like I said I have a sensitive stomach.
