Hi, I'm 19 1/2 weeks pregnant with my 4th child. I have always had an ultrasound with all my other children, but this time we have decided not to do it. The only thing that concerns me is not getting to know the placentas position. Does anyone know what the chances of having a placenta problem is? I tried to google it, but couldn't come up with much.

I don't know about the chances, but my midwife told me that if I had placenta previa, there would be spotting or some other symptom that would signal that we should check with an ultrasound. I to have decided to refuse my ultrasound. She said that even if the placenta was fine at 18 weeks, it continues to move around so you would still have to watch for the other signs of a problem. So, I wouldn't worry about it.

I just found out at my 20 week u/s that i have complete placenta previa on the posterior side and even though there is a chance it could resolve and move the location is one that is less likely to move enough for a vaginal birth
I have consulted with a couple dr.s and my homebirth midwife and they all agree that i will more than likely end up needing a c-section.

I was pretty shocked to find this all out. I have had no bleeding ,cramping or any other signs of anything wrong. Of coarse maybe if i were to wait another couple of months i probably would have started to bleed a bit and unfortunatly that may have led to bed-rest so i am very happy to know that i need to take it easy and be on pelvic rest and restricted activity as to avoid more serious restrictions. I too was hesitant to have any scan, but i am so thankful to know this now and not later due to a complication. Even though i am a bit worried at this point and very disappointed about the c-section atleast i have plenty of time to plan for the perfect "c-section" if that is where fate leads me.

Good luck with your decision making process and pregnancy.

actually the placenta does not "move around" but your uterus grows and this causes movement of the placenta. The best explanation i have heard is to think about if you drew a spot on a deflated balloon and then blow it up the spot seems to move because of the growth of the balloon.
