As you know, there is currently an investigation underway regarding the outing of Valerie Plame as a CIA agent. As you probably also know, this week US Senate candidate Jack Ryan dropped out of the race because of the scandal caused by the release of his divorce papers.

The head of the Justice Department investigation re Plame is U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald.

Guess who the Repub newspaper the Illinois Leader said (today) is being floated by the GOP as a replacement candidate for senator? Patrick Fitzgerald.

Oh, and btw, this week Bush was interviewed with his lawyer by Fitzgerald for more than 70 minutes about the Plame affair.

Some are saying Ryan's divorce papers were 'outed' by other GOP-ers because he wrote a letter to Bush saying if elected he would support the re-appointment of Fitzgerald as US Attorney.

Are the Repubs trying to buy him off the Plame investigation by offering to back him for Senator? Are Repubs trying to get him to stop investigating every GOP officeholder in IL? (He has been conducting the George Ryan investigation too, which resulted in a whole mess o convictions.)

Gotta love IL politics...

Interesting development in the CIA agent outing investigation:

Hmmm....interesting:

"Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper was held in contempt of court a second time yesterday for refusing to reveal confidential source information sought by a federal grand jury investigating the leak of a covert CIA employee's identity.

"Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas F. Hogan ordered Cooper jailed for as long as 18 months, but stayed his order until after the case is heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals. Hogan found Time magazine in civil contempt for failing to produce documents and imposed a $1,000-a-day fine on the publication, suspended until after the appeal."

Rove Testifies in CIA Leak Investigation

"President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, testified Friday before a federal grand jury trying to determine who leaked the name of an undercover CIA officer.

"Rove spent more than two hours testifying before the panel, according to an administration official who spoke only on condition of anonymity because such proceedings are secret.

"Before testifying, Rove was interviewed at least once by investigators probing the leak. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell also have been interviewed, though none has appeared before the grand jury."
