Dear Awesome Mamas,
I am really struggling with the tetanus vax as we spend a lot of time on my inlaws farm with horses and chickens. I am very uncomfortable with not vaccinating. But I am also uncomfortable vaccinating our 3.5 yo and 21 mo. Here is your chance to convince someone that tetanus vaccines are not necessary. Please give me facts, not opinions and site your sources. Books with authors and links are very appreciated!!!

Thanks bunches and bunches!!!
Look at your family tree. Go back 3 or 4 generations. Probably a lot of them lived on farms, huh?

Any deaths due to tetanus?

Probably not.

It's incredibly rare. Always has been. Even moreso in children.

Do you have any links to harcore evidence that I can show my son's ped about how rare it is and how unlikely it will be that he gets it. Also any links about the necessity of a TIG rather than a tetanus vax if you get a puncture wound. I had my DS1 in there the other day for something totally unrelated and she springs the "lockjaw" arguement on him and how important vaxs are.: Anyway, I am looking ahead of time to make sure I have something on hand when she and I get to have the happy arguement that I am no longer vaxing either of my kids, not just the one with autism. Thanks!!!!!

I am not considering the vaccine but I am curious as to which one is more effective (if there is even proof) the TIG or the vax for tetanus. Knowing that regardless of vaccine status they still give you the vax when you go in for a cut...and can give you the TIG...I wonder why anyone would get the vaccine routinely (other than to pad the pockets of the pharma co).

There's a lot of evidence (all from the CDC), but keep in mind that you don't need to prove anything to your ped. You're opening yourself up to have an "argument" about each and every disease. Do yourself a favor and nip it in the bud now.

My stock post about tetanus, with a quote at the CDC that parents don't see in those ridiculous "parent pages" or VIS:
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...85&postcount=4

What would happen if we stopped vaccinations thread (a few notes on tetanus): http://www.mothering.com/discussions...hlight=stopped

Mamakay has a post about the chances of getting struck by lightening being greater than an unvaxed individual getting tetanus - I'll see if I can locate it.

Don't bother discussing it with your ped. A waste of time and energy.

The tetanus vax is not designed to be given after an injury. That's when TIG is used....
