The more I try the worse it gets it seems. I have been doing the TTO and BS (with a very small amount of Tide) thing for a while now and it used to work but isnt anymore. I have used Sportwash - also used to work on stinky suedecloth and isnt anymore.

What else can I do? Its not just the hemp its everything - the Wonderoos, SOS, OC El Bees, CPFs - EVERYTHING!

The amonia smell is so bad its making me sick (even more so than usual since I am pregnant) and even Maxi's preschool teacher complained yesterday. We havent had a stinky diaper complaint in the 7+ month he has been in preschool - until now.

SOMEONE HELP!!! What else can I do?

I did BS and TTO and I use sportswash...and occasionaly would have the stinky's. Plus, I notice that the BS would irritate DS. So now I do a cold wash w/ 1/2 oz. sportswash and then HOT, HOT wash w/ 1/2oz of sportswash and then another HOT HOT wash. I also sometimes add a boiling pot of water every now and again. Sometimes I skip the sportswash in the cold wash and now I haven't had any problems. I never add anything else now either and it's been working pretty good. Once, when it just seemed awful I took only my hemp and put in like a tablespoon or less of bleach in the hot wash diluted in a few cups of water so I wouldn't get any spotting on the dipes and then did like 3 more hot washes to get the bleach out. That did wonders and since then I haven't had uncontrollable stink at all!

I hope you get something figured out!

When we get stink I add bleach. : Really it's the only thing that helps. I add 1/2 c. to the largest load of water possible, dump in the dipes after the washer is full and wash as usual. It REALLY helps and it's never affected the colors. The only thing is, I pull out all PUL because I don't think bleach w/ it would be a good idea.

Bleach really doesnt hurt hand dyed hemp or CPFS? What about the stitching on El Bees? I am so scared to use bleach.

I recently had a stink problem, it was mostly my pocket diapers and inserts - microfiber more than hemp. I did a cold wash with BS and a small amount of detergent, then a hot wash with a small amount of detergent (Tide), and a scoop of Oxyclean, then 2 more long hot washes with nothing, and an extra warm rinse. The stink totally cleared up. I have 1 pocket diaper that I didn't do this to, because she hadn't warn it and now whenever I use it is still reeks. So I have to do something with it, but I know whatever I did to the other diapers worked.

Morgan, do you have hard water? If you do have you tried adding MORE detergent? We have really hard water and I used about 1/2 of the recommended amount of detergent (I know it seems like a lot) and it helped get rid of the stinkies. Josh's skin is so sensitive he'd get red spots all over his diaper area so I had to stop using Tide. I now use one tablespoon of Bio-kleen laundry liquid (I know some say it's a no-no) and we have NO stink or red spots!

I hope you find something that works. I desperation I have tried bleach too and it did work, but the stink came quick.

Morgan...

I had stinky diapers in Phoenix (for the 18 months Elias lived there, we only had the occasional problem).

I found NO detergent, not even a little bit of Tide worked better. For some reason, the detergent made the problem worse.

I did a short rinse cycle with nothing in them, not BS, vinegar or EOs after I did my intitial wash. Like a mini stripping cycle after every wash to ensure detergent was out especially when using Tide, etc (this was most effective for me in AZ). Or a presoak with EO?? I personally found the smell occurred when I was not getting all the detergent/whatever I was using out of the diapers before drying. And when pee and whatever I used mixed, that was the resulting smell.

Also others mentioned Bac Out is this a possibility? Can you hit a Whole Foods at try it?

Also, use color safe bleach. I use this rarely, but it can be effective.

DO you have a water softener Morgan, or are you working with our nasty hard as a rock AZ water? I have a water softener and I got rid of our stink but I am sure the routine would be different if you have the regular hard water...

ETA: and it was only our nighttime hemp that was stinky (internal soakers...)

Morgan, I think I've got a handle on this. Because of the hard water you need to use more detergent but then it takes a million warm rinses to get rid of it SO I started using Calgon water softener and it has helped so much!!!

Here's my drill:

cold rinse with 1/2 - 1 cup of BS (more if there's a dirty dipe)
Hot wash with 1/2 cap sportwash and 1/2 cup calgon powder
Warm rinse with tto I leave the lid open and if there are bubbles I add 1/2 cup vinegar and agitate again
2md warm rinse - check for bubbles - 99% of the time they are gone!!

I don't even have stink after 12 hours overnight anymore!!!
Good luck!!

I've heard some mamas say that TTO gave them stink. It is oil, ya know? Maybe after prolonged use it builds up. Just a thought.

I've also had great sucess with calgon (I've heard that it's no no for pocket diapers though).

I'd suggest doing a strip load with just vinigar and no detergent w/o hemp items and see if you can get your non-hemp items free of residue. That way hopefully you can get some diapers ready to use. Then tackle hemp as it's own issue because it can be really stubborn.

For my pockets I like to strip with shaklee basic H, www.shaklee.com and do a search for local distributor for best price.

Here's a nice info link on hard water...
http://www.ianr.unl.edu/pubs/water/nf94.htm

ok if they stick when they are dry you probably are not using enough detergent. Everyone always recommends 1/2 the normal amountof detergent or a quarter but I use almost the full amount (yes even on my pockets) because I wash a very full load each time and I've not had a stink problem since upping the amount.

Now if they smell only when they are wet and strongly of amonia, then you may be using too much detergent. Build up is the number one cause of stink when wet I've found.

So if you have build up then a few HOT washes without anything added are in order. See if that helps. (don't boil anything with snaps) You can add some boiling water to your washer once it has filled part way though.

If the stink is there even when they are dry, then I'd say wash them again on HOT with a bit MORE detergent and see if that helps.

I am not really sure if my water is hard, it certainly isn't soft water, but I stopeed adding so many things to my wash like sportswash and TTO and just focused on the water level, temp and detergent amount and it worked out to be much simpler for me and better for my dipes.
Good Luck.
Baking soda is not good in hard water -- it clings to the diapers and causes irritation and buildup.

bac-out works great for the occasional stink for us, but we're not hard water folks. sounds like that might be a big part of your issue.

I live in AZ , but we have well water so its not too hard. My grandma who CD'd 5 kids taught me this trick. Wash all your dipes in a hot wash in the largest load on your washer( with nothing in it) to get the poo etc, stop the cyle after it spins the water. RE-start a new cyle this time adding in 1 cup of Borax and 1/2 of the recomended detergent. Let it fill up and soak, the longer the better, I let mine go over night. Then let the cycle run as normal, and Viola, no mas stinky dipes.

I have hard water in NM and I finally got rid of that ammonia stink by using Basic H and Basic L. I also have a front loader and have been adding extra water as well.

I do a cold wash with 1 tsp of baking soda and a capful of Basic H.

Then a hot wash with 2 warm rinses with 1/2 cap each of Basic H and liquid Basic L.

Unfortunately, my stink is gone but my HH fleece is repelling. So I may have to fine tune again, but it's worth it getting rid of that stench. I opened the dirty diaper pail a few days ago to do laundry and I was amazed that I was no longer bowled over by that ammonia stink!

Lordy, I feel your pain!! I went so far as to have my hubby hook up our old top loader(yes I now have 2 washers hooked up)to get rid of the stink...and it worked for like 2 months, and now I need to find out how to fix it again!!! I almost wonder if it isn't something like needing to change shampoos once in a while. I am going to try some of the suggestions on the thread I posted a while ago, and the ones here too...it's just driving me crazy!! Sorry you are going through this too!
Here is my thread:
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=218587
