I thought my 9 month old son had silent reflux, but NO meds are working so now I'm stuck again trying to figure out whre to go and what to do. My son doesn't spit up but continually is swallowing down air, wer'e thinking he's swallowing back down the acid.

He's been on zantac (didn't help), prevacid (made things worse), donperidone(halped maybe 2%), sulfracate (did nothing. He is up crying in pain ALL night long. He hasn't slept longer than 4 hours, which is VERY rare. His poor little life has been spent in so much excruciating pain. As for me trying to function on no sleep with my other two kids, gets pretty tiring.

I BF for 8 months and have him on similac which he doesn't seem to spit up off of but I don't know if it bothers his tummy or not b/c he's never not been in pain! He can't tolerate and gets worse when he eats any vegetables and fruits. He can't tolerate rice or corn. He's up all night crying worse than usual if he has anything that bothers his tummy. Right now he's on oatmeal and formula. He gets worse off of formulas that contain DHA and ARA. My naturopath said that he probably can't break down those certain oils.

He's had an upper G.I. which showed nothing. Our G.I. specialist said that because he actually got worse off of the prevacid leads him to beleive he has a problem breaking down food proteins, but had no other suggestion
( grrrr! Prevacid hinders the stomachs ability to break down food proteins and if he reacted worse on it than he may have Multiple food protein intolerance. If this is the case they say to do an elimination diet, well........he's not eating anything so how can I eliminate it?? I've thought about digestive enzymes. Has anyone had any success with them?

What should I do? I've seen dr's , naturopath, pediatrician's, specialists. I'm so desperate.

Other folks will have suggestions for digestive enzymes, we haven't needed them ourselves so I'm not good with brands.

One thing, have you done any structural work? Cranial-sacral and/or chiropractic? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there are food intolerances going on (Similac is dairy-based? And a lot of formulas have corn too, maybe all of them are at least corn-derived, so that's something to consider for which enzyme to choose, perhaps), but there may be a structural issue as well, and that could ease off some of the symptoms and then you can problem-shoot easier.

What does his poop look like? There are a couple sites I've used to help figure out my kids' poop and mine (my kids' health issues are intricately intertwined with mine, and using symptoms from both has really helped with problem-solving).

It's harder to see some of this in a diaper, I admit, but some color and consistency issues should be visible (or you can note their absence) and maybe that'll help figure out what's going on digestively.

Definitly, yes. We have done chiro many times since birth and tried crani sacral. Neither halped at all. I've got him back on pro bio gold, and he was cranky all morning and just had a nice poop and settled right down. Much happier after the poop. I would say he is a level 6 on the poop scale. A bit on the smooshy softer side, but that is not to say he's not constipated. You can still have soft poops and be constipated, which I feel he is. The donperidone helps with that, but I'll ween him off of it when the probiotics kick in and help him to poop atleast once a day.

Problem is is that he has never been pain free, well at times he is, but for the most part if he has a good day it's a heck of a night and as for nights that is when things flare up. He's at his worst after 11:00 p.m. That's when it all starts. Because he's never had a "uneventful" day and night, I can't rule out what is bothering him. I know my BM was bothersome even though I cut out everyhting I could think of and for all I know the oatmeal could somewhat be bothersome or the formula
( I just called the helpline for neocate and amino based formula and they are sending me 2 sample cans, and 2 cans to my G.I. specialist. I will strictly feed him that for 2 weeks and see if that helps.

I feel so defeated at times. I'm against meds if not needed and immunizations. I really didn't want to go the medical route with Levi but at 6 months of age I decided enough was enough the little guy was in pain. I guess where I get completely frustrated is that I still have no concrete answers

Domperidone works by inhibiting dopamine. In your body, methyl groups are responsible for breaking down dopamine. Methyl groups are made using folate and B12 - I'd try supplementing those nutrients somehow, but I'm not sure the best way with such a little one.

If you could go back to breastmilk (did you try cutting out the foods that he reacts to from your diet?), you could supplement yourself and he'd get it that way.

Also, watch out because the forms matter for folate and B12 - some people's genetics say they have a hard time with folic acid and need food folate (or folapro) instead. Can he eat legumes, especially lentils? chicken liver? And B12 has a better chance of being absorbed as a sublingual supp or as an injection.

Which Similac is he on? If he's never been pain-free than he's got to be reacting to something in the formula. Personally I wouldn't do oatmeal, because gluten is a big intolerance trigger and oatmeal is often cross-contaminated with gluten. Poor kid. You'll figure it out. Was the blood test for IgE allergies?
