I am new to CD (i.e., 2 weeks ago?). I have a chubby 14 month dd. My "stash" consists of 2 Angelwraps fleece AIOs, which are too bulky for my taste, though I do use them, and one Bummis SWW. I'm still working out the system, so I do not have a full stash yet.

I've been laying prefolds or contours into the Bummis, but they are wicking around the legs! What's going on? How often should I be changing dd? I am currently changing every 2 hours or so.

Am I using the wrong insert? Is the Bummis SWW any good?

Please help me - I am willing to try other covers, but when I do searches, the choices are overwhelming.

I have a 14 month old daughter who weighs about 25 pounds, has chunky thighs, and is a heavy wetter. I really want to CD, but I know I won't stick to it if the CD leaks. I also want trim - that's why I had chosen the Bummis. I sew too, so I would be able to make something, but what? Anyone have a trim AIO pattern?

Sorry - I am all over the map. Please help me!

Prowraps are great covers. They work well for laying a prefold into too. I've used the Bummis snap covers before and liked them pretty well. Do your Bummis have a cotton print on the outside? If so, then that is probably not helping w/ the wicking. You may want to change her more often as well if the dipe is saturated under the cover.

I'm sure you'll get more help from others

I am new to cd, too, and also have a few SWW's. I know a lot of people like the Bummis, but I am not one of them. I just tried the Bumpy day cover and really liked that much better. It just seemed to be a better fit for dd, who is also chunky.

Did you buy it new? Did you send it through the dryer once or twice?

Two things come to mind so I will throw them out there but of course they are just ideas LOL!

First off, are you sure that the diapers you are using are providing enough absorbancy? If they are completely saturated when you are changing you may want to either add a doubler of some sort (hemp is nice and trim) or change more often.

Second thought was that if you are using prefolds just folded into the cover there may be some shifting going on inside the diaper which either creates and area of much less absorbancy hence creating the weak spot and allowing for wicking or creates an actual diaper free spot where the pee has no where to go but to the cover. If this is a concern you may want to pick up a snappi or two. For information about the snappi see here and it also provides a list of retailers. They are nice and cheap and pretty user friendly in my experience.

I have always loved the Bummis covers so I hope you can figure out what is happening with them. In my experience having them go through the dryer hasn't affected their performance as of yet and the mediums that I just put away had been used for roughly about 20 months.

I find that helps. When you change your baby, take the current cover off and let it air dry, put a new cover on... next change, take that cover off, let it air dry, and re-use the cover from the previous change. I also find that if I accidentally put a Bummis cover in the dryer, it seems to wick.... if I let it air-dry after the next wash, it seems to be fine again.

definitely make sure you run the new covers through the dryer on hot once to seal any possible holes from sewing. we use this system on our very chubby legged 15 month old & find that we put it on & it looks great but have to give it a second look-over b/c there's almost always part of the prefold (IPF) poking out a little by the leg gussets.

we have one prowraps, tried it one time & DD got terrible red marks. she really really has chubby thighs & it just wasn't for her. bumkins are working on her as well with the same system.

i hope you have lots of success!

To answer some questions:

I have only put the cover in the dryer once and it was brand new.

The prefolds and contours are bunching in the middle - maybe that's the problem. I have snappis but wasn't using them. I'll try it - but how do I snappi a prefold? I've just been trifolding and laying in - no room for snappi on a trifold.

One thing comes to mind - I bought the large Bummis, thinking I'd get more wear, but large is for 30 lbs.+ and dd is only 25 lbs. Could that be it?

I really want to do this - I felt so awful this morning when I had to go and get another package of sposies. I'll keep plugging away. Any more help would be appreciated! Thanks! (Oh, and I will try the Bumpy and the Bumkins - heard good things about both.)

Here is a link of various folds for prefolds Diaper Folds. The folds I used most often with the snappi was the newspaper fold and the lets do the twist fold. Basically you put the snappi on either of the wings for both of those folds and then pull it down in the middle.

Snappi'ing your prefold would be the first thing I would try. If you want to lay your prefold right in the wrap it is really important to have a snug fitting wrap. I haven't had much success with just laying prefolds in wraps once my DS got mobile though it worked fine when he was very young. You can probably use the bummis just fine if you use the snappi but if you want to just lay it in the wrap a medium which would provide a snugger fit would probably be more successful.

I never likes Bummis either. I used Bumkins and liked them until they started scratching my sons waist really bad. We finally switched to AIO's (Little Lambs, they are affordable and work great) and have been happy since. The prowrap covers seem to be really popular if you want to stick with prefolds and covers.

Since the bummis questions have been pretty much answered, I thought Id dip into the sewing one. We made a lot of our kiddos diapers, because of price. I have SO many links and resources that if your interested let me know and I can PM/email them to you.

I made my own nighttime diaper that has 8 layers of sherpa, fleece inner and a flannel outter. Its never leaked for us yet. I love it! Its been so used its beginning to fall apart, but it still works great.

For covers I personally dont like using PUL when sewing so I bought most of mine, but I have gotten better at it, and I have a few that dont wick, hooray!

I have the New Conceptions Cover Patterns, which are side snap, and front applix. I use these patterns for my covers and diapers (that I turn and topstitch). For the diapers, I just go up a size, Say I want to make a Medium, Ill use the Large pattern, the difference is enough allowance to do the T&T.

Here is walkthrough of making a diaper: T&T style
DiaperSewing.com has a lot of diaper making resources.

PM/Email me if you want me to send what I have saved and know.

A couple of ideas:

A too-large cover could definitely cause leaking - I'd try a smaller one for sure.

I recommend Litewraps, which you can get at www.naturalbabies.com or www.babyworks.com They don't wick, are very adjustable because of the wide velcro panel on the front (versus the narrow Bummis panel), don't leave red marks, and they cost less than Bummis. They run large, so I'd definitely recomment sizing down - probably a Medium for your DD (my 23lb son wears a Small).
