I've used a variety of covers, prefolds, pockets, etc. since my DS was born... and I've settled on my system so far:
- prefolds and wool, Thirsties, and BSWW covers when we're at home
- a FB or HH pocket when we go out, then prefold/cover for the ride home

- a BG OS at night (haven't gotten brave enough to try wool at night)

Except for the BG, my 3-month old is close to growing out of this stash, and I'm trying to plan ahead for my next purchase. Here are my questions, hope you more experienced mommas can help out:

- he's in the green edge GMD prefold - what size should I get next? It fits height-wise, but it's getting really tight around his waist (we snappi right now, which I'd like to continue doing).
- do prefolds and covers still work once they get to that wriggly stage of 6 months of so? Is it realistic to think I can use prefolds through that time, or should I expect that I'll need to tri-fold them?
- should I invest in more pockets, since that may be easier to use when he starts moving around more?

I think I remember someone saying that pockets became more appealing as they got older... is this true?

Thanks in advance!!

I don't personally use PFs on my 1 year old and havent for quite awhile... I use them in an emergency but he is just so NOT having diaper changes right now!! We use mostly pockets and fitteds now, fitteds at home and pockets out and about.

Hi there

My baby is a really wriggly 6 mos and we still manage to use prefolds and snappis although there are some times when I just throw on a fitted and and happy that I have those too (we have kissaluvs mostly). WE do have some AIOs -- which are MUCH easier, but we don't have a lot of those and I don't really feel like it's so much easier that we should switch to these full time or anything. We have one pocket diaper and I find it annoying that I have to stuff the pocket, so the AIOs are better than those IMO.

We went from the GMD green edge prefolds to the red, the red are a lot bigger so he had a lot of room to grow. (If you like less bulk I think the in-the-middle color is brown.)

We have almost the exact same system as you, except we do the wool at night (though I've been thinking lately of switching to pockets at night - she seems to be wetting a little too much for the wool lately).

She is currently 4m old, and I have no plans to change the system. We have the red edge already and use them at night, but we're still in the green edge for daytime. I imagine we'll move into the red edge next month sometime - DD is a little on the small side.

I have a friend whose baby is 10m old, and she's still doing prefolds and her system is very similar to yours as well. I've watched her change diapers, and her DD is very wiggly but it doesn't seem like a huge struggle to get the prefold on, even with pins. Her mom seems to have mastered the art of distracting her with a toy, holding her down and getting the diaper on as quick as possible. I think wiggly babies make changing diapers more challenging no matter what kind of diaper you're using, it doesn't seem like the additional few seconds a prefold takes to put on vs a fitted or AIO would make a significant difference in the grand scheme of things. I have some AIOs that take me forever to put on with all the snapping and adjusting - sometimes when I get home from an outing of AIOs I'm so glad to get back to the simplicity of the prefolds!

I think whether or not you want to keep doing prefolds is up to you. If you really love them, you can make them work. That said, I like pockets for quick diaper changes. I like snaps because they last longer than aplix-- and I can get the diapers snapped in a flash since it's very familiar.

I have 14 medium fuzzi bunz and we use these exclusively. They're great for fast diaper changes!
