I have been a bad, bad kefir mommy....


I got some grains from someone 2 months ago and plopped them into a quart of raw milk and put them in the refrigerator..... Then left them there until today
. They were quite small when I got them, and now I am having trouble finding them in all the little chunks of separated soured milk. What do I do? How do I find them? How can I tell what is a chunk of milk and what is a grain? It doesn't help that I am inexperienced with them! Water grains were so much easier to see!

I've heard they can be revived after this long, but I have to find them first! I'm committed now too since I've had my hands swishing around in there


Help please!!!

Do you have a plastic collander? You could let the kefir drain through the collander into a bowl and smush it all around with a plastic spoon.

Thanks!

I don't have one, but DD and I are just about to walk to the store, so I'll get one. I have a slotted plastic spoon, but I think a collander would work better in this case.

So if I (gently) smush it around, am I right that the milk chunks will kind of dissipate but the grains should hold together? That's kind of how I found what I think is one doing that with my hands, but I wasn't sure.....

Once you get them partially seperated, put them in a bowl of filtered water and gently rub them between your fingers to get the rest of the curds off of them. I think Dom's site talks about what to do.

That should be fine Stacey. I like Allison's idea too. That works well.
