Help! I have an 8-wk son and am using my set of small Fuzzi Bunz for the 2nd time--used them for DD with no problems. The FB and inserts are now extremely stinky! They don't smell that bad fresh out of the dryer, but when they get wet, they really reek! It's actually unpleasant to be next to DS with a slightly wet dipe on.

Here's my routine: I have slightly softened water, use Tide Free, and have a top-loading washer, water on high. DS is a very heavy wetter, totally BF, and I'm using a mix of prefolds, the free inserts from MotherEve, and Cotton Babies inserts.

One full wash cycle with no detergent. Usually on hot, but I'm realizing I should probably use cold.
One full cycle with a small amount of detergent and hot water. About 1/4-1/2 of the recommended amount of detergent for a load.
Extra rinse/spin.
Machine dry.

I've tried putting some vinegar in the first cycle, but didn't seem to help. I've also tried soaking in the first cycle for a few hours, didn't seem to help.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe it could be a problem with my washer--my bath towels are also smelling mildewy and I can't get it out.

Thanks in advance--I hope you guys know more about this than I do.

Yep, strip em. I was having the exact same problem with my fuzzibunz--to the point I was about to get rid of them--I had to wash with a lower water level 11 times to get all the soap out!!!
Also, I put my detergent in the first cycle so more of it rinses out in the second.

I've had the same problem -- it only goes away for a while, so I'm still experimenting...

Here are my suggestions that work for a while at least:

Sportwash
OR
1/2cup baking soda in first cold wash, 1 cup vinegar in last rinse
OR
(and I've only done this a couple times cuz I've heard I'm not supposed to...) Downey Advanced in the first cold wash (this gives a GREAT smell for a while, and I haven't noticed any absorbency problems).
