Ok, so maybe this isn't so tragic, but I need help!

My dd is only 2 but got a chipped tooth somehow, we didn't notice & now it's a cavity. I took her to the dentist today hoping it was something else: but it wasn't.

So now our choices are to put her out or just use novacaine. The Dr. said it would take 20 minutes at the most, it's not a bad one yet. But I am so scared about what could go wrong with putting her out--we are going to try just novacaine. But they have this strap thing they put her in to restrain her, it looks like a papoose board...this is what I've thought of so far & if anyone can help I would be so grateful.

*get there early so she can play with the papoose restraint & not be too freaked out by it
*valerian tincture during the car ride
*chamomile all day

Can any of you wise mamas think of any other distraction from being restrained & drilled techniques? I don't know how much I should let her go through--if she freaks about the drill should I stop the procedure & take her somewhere to put her out? I JUST DON'T KNOW...HELP!!!Please!!!:

Go over to the dental board. All the info you need is there! Since it is a small cavity and will only take 20 minutes, I would definitely NOT put her out. It's not worth it!
The local anathesia is not actually novacaine, but something like it. It's ok, she won't feel a thing.
However, the papoose board is a really hard thing. My dd is definitely fearful because of having used this papoose board. Did you ask to just hold her. Wrap her in her own blanket and hold her hands yourself? Or to use Nitrous Oxide instead? Or the possiblity of another dentist who will opt to NOT use the papoose board?
The recommended herbs, essences, oils for calming during dental procedures are Rescue Remedy by Bach's and Peace and Calming and Roman Chamomile by Young Oils. The RR is given just before the appointment and the other two are rubbed on the feet and chest. I can't remember which on which, but there is a thread over there called something like "Sedation, oils, etc ....." A search for sedation should bring it up.
Don't worry too much, it is so good that you are dealing with the tooth now. Definitely read thru some threads over there, you will learn so much and hopefully put your fears at ease.
....and take some RR yourself. I did during my dd's dental experiences and it helped a lot!

Not all docs use the board. You could call around to other dentists and ask how they would approach this situation.

The highly recommended pediatric dentist that we first saw was a nightmare. We ended up instead seeing a general dentist--he doesn't even OWN a board. He's a a very patient, kind man who explains to the kids what he's about to do, lets them sit in mom's lap if need-be, and tells them jokes.

The papoose board gives me chills.

Thanks guys, after I stopped panicking, I found the denal portion of the health area...and have been reading through the archives there...If anyone knows how to move this thread, please do as I am technologically challenged: ...I cancelled our appt with the papoose dentist for today, because I want to see what all my options are...I keep thinking maybe she'll surprise us all & be mellow without any drugs, but I refuse to torture her for 20 minutes, there's gotta be some calm way to do it & these dentists may not be the ones...I asked if the board was required & they said "well, we can't have the baby moving around when the drill is in her mouth"...but maybe she wouldn't freak out so much if she was with me! She wouldn't even sit in the dentist chair the last time we were there...How can I expect her to deal with a drill????!!!! Maybe nitrous is the way to go...I did it in my Grateful Dead tour days & I'm still here...but doesn't it kill A LOT of brain cells?
Anyway, I'm going over to peruse "Dental" but thanks Malamama & Joan for your sageness
