I just sent this email, so I'm just copying and pasting:

We need some serious prayers ASAP for our entire family, but mostly for the littlest one of us. For those of you who don't know, we are currently going on 22 weeks pregnant with our third child (fourth if you count our 18 year old "foster son" Brandon- which we do! Alexis is 8 tomorrow and Gloria is just past 2 now). We went in for a routine ultrasound this morning and when the high risk obstetrician walked in the room, we knew it was no longer "routine." The short story is that our little boy (yes, he was not shy about sharing his gender with us) is one of the 1 in 10,000 (it's possible that the risk is higher, but the stats are sketchy) affected by a mysterious thing called "amniotic band syndrome." There is no known cause or prevention, it's just one of those things. Some of the amniotic membrane has separated and formed bands which can (and have) wrap around various parts of the baby. Right now, little Levi has a band around his right wrist (and a likelihood of losing that hand), one around his middle three left fingers (and has lost the tip of his index finger already) and there are some membranes gathered near the umbilical cord. While the umbilical cord has not been restricted and is still flowing well, it is gathered up in one spot and can't float around like is normal. This means two things. The first is that Levi will not be born under midwife care at the birth center. He'll be born via scheduled cesarean section, likely earlier than full term. We're being referred to high risk doctors and to pediatric specialists. There is still a chance that the bands will tighten on the umbilical cord, in which case we'll lose him quickly and with no warning. It is good news that everything is stable this far into the pregnancy, however. Each day he keeps fighting increases his odds. We'll be seeing the doctors ALOT this summer and going in for lots of ultrasounds to check on things. We'll be having a long consultation soon with the OB who will be taking over for the midwives and we'll be sure to keep you all posted. We are going to ask about the possibility of in-utero surgery that is sometimes done when this syndrome affects vital organs or the umbilical cord (which it does in this case).

Please please please keep our family, and most especially baby Levi, in your prayers. He needs to be wrapped in prayer right now. Also pray for Tim and I as we struggle for a way to explain this all to Alexis. She's old enough that she needs to know what's going on, but young enough that she may not understand it all. Pray that she's able to remember that no matter what happens, God has a plan for her baby brother. I'm sure you'll see us around. I'm not on bed rest or anything, there's nothing to be done in regards to my diet or activity level or anything that will make a difference. Please, feel free to pass this email on to your prayer warriors, church family or prayer chains. Little Levi needs to be wrapped up in prayer right now.

This brings tears to my eyes. So scary!
I will be praying for you guys and I will post it as a prayer request on my blog (as my readers are all Christians who'd be happy to pray). I have seen the Lord work so many medical miracles and will be praying for the best outcome for little Levi!

Not in your DDC but wanted to offer my prayers as well. I had never heard of this til a couple weeks ago when I saw a situation like yours on the news. They did the in utero surgery with apparently great success. I hope that you are able to find a solution.

My cousin just had a baby boy in November (she was due the end of Jan) and they also told her he had amniotic band syndrome around his arm, etc. It was so stressful, plus she had low amniotic fluid so she was in the hospital starting around 20 weeks. I remember looking on all the sites, etc. and they were terrible. He was born early (b/c of low fluids) and does have club feet, but nothing nearly as bad as was predicted and it can be fixed. She had other high risk factors along with amniotic band syndrome and he still ended up healthy with no major physical deformities at all. I hope the same holds true for you and your little one!
