Please suggest a durable child's table and chair set

673 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  thundersweet
I need to outfit a playhouse with a table and chairs suitable for the 3 year set. I'm willing to have plastic since I expect muddy toddlers to manhandle everything. I don't want to think twice about it if they draw on it. I'd rather not buy from a large corporation (unless maybe it's used - I guess I could look on ebay but figure the shipping would be awful...)

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi!
We have a simple nice STURDY wooden table and chair set from Shopko- not exactly a small local business, I know, but the play table is seriously more sturdy than our dining room table!
IKEA has nice inexpensive play tables and chairs, wooden and plastic, all kinds. Again, huge corporation.
To support a local business as well as good bang for the buck I would suggest checking out unfinished furniture places. If its someone local they'll always be willing to make just what you want, if they don't already have it. And it might be pretty inexpensive. You can always paint unfinished furniture with a high gloss finish for easy cleanup.
Garage sales, goodwill, kid consignment stores are good if you want something cheap and used and most likely plastic.
Antique stores usually have little wooden benches or stools, and you can find coffee tables everywhere.
The kids' alltime favorite play table is, naturally, our living room coffee table. Which used to look nice!
Good luck,
Normally I would go for wood, and we do have one wood table & chairs set, but you just can't beat IKEA's prices. There's one model, and I can't remember the name of it, where the chairs are about ten dollars each and the table maybe 25. I justified the purchase by reminding myself that trees are cut down for the wooden ones, and I will be sure to pass on the plastic stuff to another user instead of just throwing them out to not decompose. :LOL I also see unfinished, unpainted sets at the craft shop Joanna's for about fifty bucks.
We just bought one from Ikea. It was about $29 which was great but shipping was $24. So about $55 we got a table and 2 chairs delivered. Here is a picture of it http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/4...781a0000001610 We bought my dd a wooden kitchen set for her 3rd birthday and wanted an unfinished table and chairs to go with it. I looked all around for a decent priced table but could not find one. Even the unfinished place wanted well over $100 for a set like the one we bought from Ikea. I am not 100% impressed with the Ikea one (some of the holes did not match up on the back of the chairs, not too big of a deal though) but for the money its fine. I think its called the Svala.

Forgot to add that I was told to take a fine sandpaper to it to remove any marks or stains from the lkids but have not had to do that yet since its brand new. You could always stain or paint it as well.
