I have a 13 month old whose nursing habits have not changed significantly. She has slept through the night for 10 months or so - so we have not nursed at night for quite some time.

Problem - I woke up this morning (2 a.m.) with a sharp pain in my right breast. I felt a hard lump. Woke up the gal to help me out and had her nurse for awhile on the affected breast. Nursing was quite painful, but the lump/hardness seemed to soften after nursing. I had the chills and a fever of 100.3 when I woke up for the day ~5 a.m.

During my first pumping session (I WOH) - there was a slight pink tinge to the milk from the affected breast.

Now - my right breast is sore to the touch and I can still feel slight hardness. Could this be mastitus? Or just a plugged duct? Help! I am supposed to leave town tomorrow for a week long vacation (with my daughter) and wonder if I should get a prescription before I leave?

What would cause this if our nursing/pumping sesions have remained relatively constant over the past few months?

thanks!

If you are going away I would call and see if someone can call in a prescription for you. The only time I had mastitis, they didn't even need to see me. I spoke to them over the phone. With the antibiotics I felt better in a day. My DS was 14 months old. Turns out I was pregnant for number 2! I think that is why I got it! Nursed right through the mastitis and the whole pregnancy.

Yes, it sounds like mastitis.

If you get an antibiotic you need to go on probiotics as well or you could end up with a yeast problem.

I self-treated with herbs last time and it cleared up but if you try that and don't see an improvement within a day with regards to the chills and fever I would see a doctor ASAP as this can become very serious if not taken care of.
