I am exhausted and in such pain that my tolerance for everything is dwindling. Last night I got three and a half hours of sleep and I cried myself to sleep it hurt so much.

DD is one year old and just getting her top teeth. Four are coming in at once and just breaking the surface. DD wants to nurse all night long which usually isn't a problem for me but her upper teeth feel like razors going back and forth across my nipple. I am dreading each nursing session. My nipples are in constant pain and erection.

Please, someone tell me that once the teeth are down, the pain will stop. She doesn't bite so it's not that, it's just the sawing motion while she sucks that's killing me. I desperately need to hear that the pain subsides once the teeth are completely in, otherwise, I don't think I can keep going and I want to be able nurse until she is ready to wean herself.

Thanks for listening.

This too shall pass.

It will. I'm nursing my 35 month old ds and it doesn't hurt when he nurses unless he's latched on incorrectly.

It does pass, really it does. It just takes a while for them to learn to nurse without the teeth coming into contact with your breast. For a while, ds bit every single @#$% time he latched on, and I thought I would come unglued. But he doesn't do it any more (and he has 4 top and 4 bottom now at 13 months).

I would take Motrin to help ease the discomfort, and also be vigilant to de-latch dd when she's not really nursing. Ds would be attached all night long if I didn't pop him off when he's done. Doing the Pantley pull-off (from the No Cry Sleep Solution) where you push their chin up to close their mouth and hold it gently after they de-latch seems to work well for us.

Thank you both. I will look into the No Cry Sleep Solution. It doesn't seem to be biting though, it seems to be back and forth rubbing as she nurses. Is this what you mean about what she will eventually get used to not doing?

I will check back in a few days as I will be out of town but any responses are sooo greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I have gone through this twice; once when upper teeth came in, and once when ds fell and chipped the bottoms of both front upper teeth. I can relate. The pain was excruciating, and I seriously considered weaning before his teeth were smoothed by the dentist. Even then, it took a couple of weeks for the little sores on my nipples to heal.
Things are back to normal now, though, happy 16-month-old who loves dee-dee.
I'm so glad I stuck it out. It was truly awful for a while, but worth it in the end.
Definitely try Advil or Tylenol. They saved me. Also, I used my finger to pull the sore spot over to one side while ds nursed so he wouldn't keep hurting the same spot.
Good luck!

Oh man, I feel your pain. But, it WILL end. My 10mos.old has all 16 teeth already and he's an awesome nurser still. The worst times were the first 2 teeth (what the heck are these?!?!) and then when he got 5 molars/canines at once. It just hurts and they feel ucky and all they want to do is rub something on their little gums to make the hurt go away.
I'm not huge on pain patience so I'm sure I yelped or popped him off when he'd scrape off. I don't know if he ever made a connection, but he's only scraped when the teeth are emerging. Then, he'd go right back to "perfection." :LOL

Hang in there!!!

It will pass! I had this same thing recently but now either she doesn't do it anymore or I don't notice but its better. She has 3 top teeth now. At first it was really painful but now its fine. One thing that really helped me was making her take all of the top part of the areola in her mouth. I know usually you want them to take the bottom but at this age their mouths are big enough they can take it all. I kept relatching her and making sure that she was taking a lot of the areola and it really helps!

i had this problem too, after his teeth were established they smoothed out a little and weren't as sharp as razors. The thing that helped me the most was really supporting
his` head because gravity naturally made his top teeth dig in. i also kept my finger at the ready to delatch him the minute it started scraping. i really hated that time. he basically had to learn how to nurse with teeth. i agree to get a lot of the aerola in their mouth. good luck. it will get better!

Thank you all for your wonderful ideas - they have helped. The middle two of the four upper teeth have dropped down a bit and don't hurt as much. I am hoping once the eye teeth come down it will all subside - until it's time to do it all again

Thanks again for all your support.
