I'm definitely not an expert but I did nurse my dd for 2 years so I'll see if I can help. Do you have any white spots on your nipple? For awhile I kept having trouble with plugged pores (I think that's what it's called). I would get a plug of milk right at the end that looked a little bit like a whitehead pimple. I just took a pair of tweezers and pulled on the white spot until it came out and voila! no more painful nursing. If that doesn't work, check out LLL's website. I'm sure you could find info there.

Good luck!

Yeah, I thought of a milk blister too when you described the symptoms. Take a look at these links to help you decide whether it's a duct or a milk blister:
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html
http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html

I've been plagued by plugged duct for my entire nursing career. My son is so inconsistent with his nursing that when for some reason he doesn't nurse over the course of a day, I'll get a plugged duct. It was worse when he was younger, but he's 20 months old, and it still happens.

I read about lecithin on another board, and I've been taking it for a couple of weeks (1000mg, 2x/day), and no plugged ducts, even though I got achy when he fell asleep the other night without nursing. The fact that I didn't get a plugged duct from that is encouraging.

I also have to watch out for blocked pores/gunk in the nipple. That'll make it worse. I've never had an actual milk blister--it's not painful, just gunky.

i don't think it is a milk blister. now i only have pain in my breast, not nipple. i feel like it is just bruised or something...i'm not sure. it is not getting worse, so that is good, right?
